Rodri Wants Julian Alvarez at Barcelona

Rodri has barely unpacked his bags in Barcelona, but he already knows exactly who he wants alongside him at Camp Nou: Julian Alvarez.

The Spain international, fresh from his move from Manchester to Catalonia, has been clear and unapologetic about it. Asked whether he would bring his former team-mate to Barcelona, Rodri didn’t hesitate.

“Would I sign him here? Of course,” he told Mundo Deportivo. “I think he is a sensational player. I would take him here without hesitation. I had the chance to play with him for two years, and I think he is an incredible player, truly incredible.”

Those two years together in the Premier League gave Rodri a close-up view of Alvarez’s range. Not just the goals, but the rest of the package. The work rate. The intelligence. The willingness to morph into whatever the team needed.

Alvarez’s name has been one of the constants of this summer’s rumour mill. Barca liked him. Real Madrid liked him. Plenty of others did too. But Atletico Madrid dug their heels in. Letting a star forward walk to a direct rival inside Spain was never going to be an easy sell in the boardroom.

Arsenal also explored the possibility, sensing an opportunity to tempt him back to the Premier League. The response was telling. Reports in England and Spain suggested Alvarez had no appetite for a return. His future, for now, is painted in red and white stripes.

Rodri, though, sees a player who would slip seamlessly into Barcelona’s evolving attack. Not just as a classic No. 9, but as something far more flexible.

“He has almost played more often as a number 10 than as a number 9, even though he initially came from a number 9 position,” Rodri explained. “But he has also adapted to a role where he can play as an attacking midfielder, a playmaker, and he has even played matches as a central midfielder. He is truly a spectacular player.”

That versatility is exactly what top clubs are paying for now. Alvarez built his reputation as a penalty-box striker, but his game has stretched and twisted into new shapes. He drops into pockets, links play, presses from the front, and still carries that striker’s instinct in the area. For a coach, he’s three players in one.

Atletico, unsurprisingly, are in no rush to let that go. The 26-year-old has already featured twice in La Liga this season, and Diego Simeone will lean heavily on his goals and movement if Atletico are to put together a serious title push. In a league where margins are thin and firepower decides everything, Alvarez is central to their plans.

Even so, Rodri’s public admiration will only add fuel to a fire that never really goes out. Barca are constantly scanning the market for elite attacking options, aware that one big opportunity can reshape a front line for years.

For now, Alvarez is an Atletico player, locked into Simeone’s demanding system and chasing trophies in Madrid. But with a former team-mate calling for him from Catalonia and Europe’s giants watching closely, how long can Los Rojiblancos hold off the next big bid?
