Rodri's Return: Barcelona Prepares for Rayo Vallecano Clash
Barcelona eased into match mode on Saturday morning, tuning up for Monday night’s league clash with Rayo Vallecano at the Spotify Camp Nou – but all eyes were on one man working to a different beat.
Rodri, fresh from lifting the World Cup with Spain and already a crowd favourite after an impressive debut against Athletic Bilbao, did not join the main group. Instead, as reported by Spanish outlet Sport, he stayed indoors, splitting his workload between the gym and an individual session away from the collective drills.
This is not a setback. It is a plan.
Since arriving, Rodri has been on a tailored programme, taking part in only a limited number of full sessions. Barcelona’s medical and physiotherapy staff are managing his return step by step, intent on rebuilding his match rhythm without risking overload after a summer that ended later – and more intensely – than anyone else’s.
Inside the club, there is no hint of alarm over his condition. Quite the opposite. They see him as ready to contribute and central to Hansi Flick’s long-term blueprint. But with the midfielder having returned from holiday only a few days ago, after carrying Spain to global glory, nobody at Barça is inclined to push him to the limit in late August.
The expectation is clear: Rodri should be available for Flick against Rayo Vallecano, but a place in the starting XI would be a surprise. The club plan to drip-feed his minutes, not throw him straight into the fire.
While Rodri followed his own route back to full throttle, the rest of the squad got going at 9:30 a.m. on the Tito Vilanova pitch at the Joan Gamper training complex. Flick had every fit first-team player out on the grass, sharpening up for the third round of the 2026–2027 La Liga campaign.
Among them was Dominik Livaković, Barcelona’s newest signing, who completed his second training session as a Barça player. The Croatian goalkeeper is wasting no time bedding into his new surroundings, already part of the daily rhythm and routines.
The absences told their own story. Gavi sat this one out, while long-term casualties Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji continue their extended recovery work away from the main group.
Barcelona look calm, structured and sure of their plan. The question now is not whether Rodri will lead this team, but how quickly Flick decides to hand him the keys.
