Richarlison’s Vasco Escape Bid Hits Wall as Tottenham Stands Firm

Richarlison’s summer of uncertainty has taken another sharp turn, and this time Tottenham Hotspur are the ones slamming the door shut.

The Brazilian forward has been pushing to engineer a return to Vasco da Gama, the club where he came through as a youngster, with reports in Brazil on Thursday claiming he had already agreed personal terms. With the Brazilian transfer window closing on Friday night, it looked like a late, emotional homecoming might be on the cards.

Tottenham have other ideas.

Contract standoff blocks Brazil move

According to BBC Sport, Richarlison and Spurs are locked in a dispute over the remaining nine months of his contract. The 29-year-old is described as “keen to be released from his deal” so he can walk away for free and smooth his move to Vasco. Spurs, though, have ruled out tearing up his contract and are refusing to negotiate a settlement on the money still owed.

The situation is even more tangled. Tottenham hold a 12‑month option to extend Richarlison’s deal through to the end of next season, strengthening their hand and making a clean break even more complicated.

Talks between the club and the player’s representatives are ongoing, but the stand-off has escalated in recent days. Time is not on Richarlison’s side. When the Brazilian window shuts on Friday night, Vasco’s chance to sign him this year shuts with it.

A window full of near-misses

This is not the first move to collapse for the forward in a chaotic few weeks.

Tottenham tried to offload Richarlison late in the English summer window as part of a swap deal involving Iliman Ndiaye. The plan was clear: Spurs would send Richarlison to Everton and bring Ndiaye in the opposite direction. The deal fell apart when Richarlison failed to agree personal terms with Everton.

That misfire had a knock-on effect. Without Richarlison leaving, Tottenham could not land Ndiaye. The forward instead joined Manchester City, while Roberto De Zerbi’s side turned to Chelsea’s Mykhaylo Mudryk, taking the winger on loan with an option to buy.

Richarlison’s options kept shrinking. A proposed switch to Trabzonspor in Turkey also failed to materialise. Vasco da Gama emerged as his next, and perhaps last, escape route of this window. Now even that is hanging by a thread.

De Zerbi: “We have to go to another page”

Amid the noise, Roberto De Zerbi has been clear about where he stands. The head coach revealed a frank pre-season conversation with Richarlison that framed the club’s approach.

“At the beginning of pre-season I spoke to Richarlison and asked him if he wanted to extend his contract because I was happy to keep him with us,” De Zerbi said. “He didn’t want to.”

De Zerbi did not hide his admiration for the Brazilian.

“So, Richarlison is a good player, yes. He was important last season, yes, very important. He’s a good guy, yes. But in the end, I had to stop myself putting pressure on the players if the players show me they want to leave.

“I’m sorry for him, but we have to go to another page and work with Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush.”

The message is blunt. De Zerbi respects what Richarlison gave Spurs, but he has already mentally moved on, building his attack around Solanke and Marmoush while Richarlison fights his contractual battle off the pitch.

As the clock ticks down on the Brazilian window, one question hangs over all of this: does Richarlison get the clean break he craves, or does he stay in limbo at a club that has already turned the page without him?
