Real Madrid TV Criticizes Referee for Mbappé's Penalty Incident

The new La Liga season barely has its boots dirty and it already has a full-blown refereeing storm. At the centre of it: Kylian Mbappé, a 94th-minute penalty, and Real Madrid’s own television channel accusing the officials of a “technical error” in Seville.

A disallowed goal, then late chaos

The tension had been building long before stoppage time. Carlos Espi thought he had pulled Real Madrid level, only to see his goal ruled out minutes before the final whistle. That decision already had Madrid seething.

Then came the flashpoint.

Deep into added time, with Real Betis clinging to a 1-0 lead, Mbappé stepped up from the spot. The French forward’s effort was saved by the Betis goalkeeper, and the home side erupted in relief.

Madrid’s players did not. They immediately surrounded the referee, insisting a Betis defender had encroached into the area before the ball was struck.

The referee waved play on. No retake. Moments later, the match was over: Betis 1, Real Madrid 0.

Real Madrid TV goes on the attack

That decision lit the fuse in Madrid. The club’s official television channel launched a fierce on-air breakdown of the incident, turning what was already a talking point into one of the biggest controversies of the opening rounds of La Liga.

Citing the images, Real Madrid TV argued that a Betis defender had his right foot on the penalty area line at the exact moment Mbappé hit the ball, then stepped fully inside as the play unfolded. For the channel, that was enough to demand a retake and enough to say the defender “directly affected” the outcome of the penalty.

The broadcast also highlighted Héctor Bellerín, claiming he too had one foot touching the line as Mbappé struck the ball.

Their verdict on the referee’s handling of the situation was scathing. Real Madrid TV called it “a contradiction from the referee” in relation to the laws of the game and expressed astonishment “that a referee does not know his own regulations”, labelling the decision “a technical error”.

The criticism didn’t stop there. The channel suggested that if the same incident had involved Barcelona, the outcome would have been different, declaring: “Had this happened with Barcelona, the penalty would have been retaken, and had Espi’s goal been for Barcelona, perhaps it would not have been disallowed.”

For the Madrid channel, the explanation boiled down to two options: “oversight or incompetence”. Either way, it argued, that was why the foul during the taking of the penalty “was not awarded”.

Clash of interpretations

From the refereeing side, the stance was clear. The officials maintained that Marc Bartra, one of the defenders in question, did not step on the line at the moment of the kick. For them, there was no infringement that warranted intervention.

Real Madrid TV flatly rejected that interpretation. Even if Bartra never actually touched the line, the channel insisted, he charged forward too early and intervened directly in the play, which in its view should have triggered a retake under the letter of the law.

So a single penalty in stoppage time has become a symbol of something bigger: a raw early-season fault line between Real Madrid, the refereeing establishment, and the constant scrutiny of every frame of video. And all of it off the back of one missed chance from 12 yards that might yet echo through the rest of Madrid’s campaign.
