JJ Gabriel’s future at Manchester United has been thrown into fresh doubt after the highly rated 15-year-old travelled to Barcelona while some of Europe’s biggest clubs line up for his signature.

The forward has formally informed United that he wants his registration cancelled with immediate effect, a dramatic move that underlines the growing tension around one of the club’s most exciting academy prospects.

Real Madrid have already registered strong interest, while Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Barcelona are all understood to be tracking the London-born youngster. Gabriel left the UK on Thursday, initially heading to France, and is now in Barcelona as the tug-of-war over his next step intensifies.

Registration row and EU passport route

United’s stance on his registration is pivotal. If the club choose to retain it, Gabriel would be blocked from joining another English side until the end of the season. That would effectively shut down any domestic move in the short term.

There is, however, a potential escape route. Gabriel could become eligible to join an EU club when he turns 16 on 6 October if he secures a European Union passport. Carrick urges calm amid growing scrutiny

Carrick again faced questions about the teenager at his Friday news conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Fulham. The United manager chose his words carefully, stressing the need to protect a player still in his mid-teens.

"He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important we don't play anything out here," Carrick said.

"With the exposure and scrutiny and everything, you got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything.

"The situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's OK is the important thing."

The message was clear: United want to dial down the noise, even as speculation around Gabriel’s next move grows louder.
