Real Madrid Signs Ibrahima Konate on Free Transfer
Real Madrid have moved decisively in the market again, securing Ibrahima Konate on a four-year deal that will take the France defender to the Bernabeu on a free transfer from Liverpool this summer.
The 27-year-old will join the European champions when his contract at Anfield expires at the end of June, ending a three-year spell on Merseyside that brought major silverware but closed with a contract stand-off neither side could bridge. Talks broke down over the gap between the club’s valuation and the wages Konate believed reflected his status, and from there the parting became inevitable.
Madrid have wasted no time. The Spanish giants confirmed they have reached an agreement with Konate “for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until 30 June, 2030”, adding another powerful, athletic centre-back to a squad already stacked with elite talent.
For Liverpool, it is the end of a £35m investment that began in 2021, when they prised Konate from RB Leipzig on a five-year contract. Across three campaigns he made 183 appearances in all competitions, anchoring the defence in some of the club’s biggest nights and helping deliver the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
His departure, though expected in recent weeks, still carries a sting. Konate revealed he was “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye” to the Liverpool fans when the Reds closed their Premier League season against Brentford on 24 May. “At that moment,” he admitted, “I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you.”
Now his focus turns to two stages that define careers: the 2026 World Cup, where he is part of France’s squad, and the Bernabeu, where the demands are ruthless and the rewards immense. Liverpool lose a cornerstone of their back line for nothing. Real Madrid gain a Champions League-hardened defender entering his prime.
One club resets. The other reloads.
