Real Madrid's €150m Bid for Michael Olise: Pérez's Election Gamble
Florentino Pérez is preparing to tie his re‑election campaign to a €150m (£130m) swing at the transfer market’s latest jewel: Michael Olise.
The Real Madrid president, expected to see off challenger Enrique Riquelme in this weekend’s election, has signalled that a blockbuster signing will follow swiftly if he stays in power. Riquelme has tried to counter with his own headline act, promising to bring Erling Haaland to the Bernabéu – a pledge that has already drawn the threat of legal action from Manchester City.
This is an election being fought as much on the pitch as in the ballot box.
Pérez’s galáctico card
Pérez addressed the Spanish media on Thursday and teased Madrid supporters with the promise of a huge bid for a galáctico-level player next week. He publicly denied that he was talking about Olise. Behind the scenes, the picture is very different.
The Bayern Munich winger is understood to be the primary target. If Pérez secures another term, Madrid intend to test Bayern’s resolve with a €150m offer for a player they see as a cornerstone of their next great side.
There is admiration at the Bernabéu for Paris Saint‑Germain midfielder Joao Neves as well, but the plan is clear: Olise first, everyone else later. The Frenchman has moved to the top of the list.
From Selhurst Park to the summit
Olise’s rise has been rapid but not accidental. The former Crystal Palace winger has exploded since his move to Germany in 2024, reshaping Bayern’s attack and forcing his name into any serious conversation about the world’s best forwards.
Under Vincent Kompany he has helped Bayern to two Bundesliga titles, bringing a mix of elegance and incision on the right flank that Madrid have long craved. His form has made him central to France’s plans for the upcoming World Cup, where he is expected to be a key figure.
That combination – age, profile, and production at the highest level – is exactly what Madrid want as they try to build a squad capable of dominating Europe again.
Bayern dig in
Bayern, though, are in no mood to play the feeder club.
Olise is under contract until 2029, and the German champions are preparing to fight hard to keep him. Uli Hoeness, the club’s honorary president, has already drawn a line in the sand by labelling the winger “unsellable”. The message is blunt: if Madrid want him, they will have to blow the doors off.
The interest from Spain is no passing flirtation. José Mourinho, whose return as Madrid manager will be finalised if Pérez is re‑elected, made a point of watching Olise in person when Bayern beat Stuttgart in last month’s German Cup final. It was a clear signal of intent from a coach who has always demanded ready‑made match‑winners.
Mourinho sees a player who can decide big nights. Bayern see the same – and that is why they are determined not to lose him.
A restless giant prepares to spend
Madrid are heading into the summer with something they are not used to: a two‑year stretch without a single trophy. For a club built on parades and podiums, that is an intolerable drought.
The response is already under way. Deals have been arranged to bring Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer and to sign Netherlands defender Denzel Dumfries from Internazionale, moves that point to a broader rebuild at the back.
Olise, though, would be different. He would be the statement, the banner across the skyline that says Madrid intend to rule again.
If Pérez wins, the Bernabéu will look to him to deliver on that promise. Bayern insist their winger is going nowhere. Something will have to give – and when clubs of this size collide over a player of this calibre, the outcome can reshape a season, and sometimes an era.
