Raúl Asencio Returns to Real Madrid Squad for Rayo Vallecano Clash

José Mourinho has his squad locked in for Saturday’s league meeting with Rayo Vallecano, and one name jumps straight off the page: Raúl Asencio.

The young defender returns to a Real Madrid matchday list after more than a month on the treatment table, finally shaking off the muscular problems that stalled both his season and his future.

Asencio back from the brink

Asencio has endured a stop-start spell since suffering a rectus femoris injury, then aggravating matters with a shin issue that stretched his absence to around six weeks. Until now, he had not played a single minute under Mourinho.

That changes this weekend. After several days of full group training and no setbacks, the medical staff cleared him, and Mourinho has brought him into the squad for the Rayo clash.

The timing is no coincidence. Madrid are staring at a heavy run of fixtures, with league games squeezed into midweek. Mourinho badly needed another body in central defence. Asencio gives him exactly that.

A turbulent summer, a clean slate?

His return also draws a line under a chaotic summer.

Asencio came close to leaving Real Madrid before his injury froze any transfer talks and left his future hanging. Off the pitch, he has been dragged through the courts. He was recently acquitted in the case involving a video in which he appeared, yet in the same period he was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in Gran Canaria last August.

Mourinho did not hide his frustration.

“A Real Madrid player remains a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. What you do outside the club can harm your reputation and the club's reputation, and I am not happy,” he said earlier, making his stance painfully clear.

Now the defender is fit, available, and out of excuses. The noise around his name shifts back to the pitch. He has a coach to convince and a reputation to rebuild.

Mourinho’s options and absentees

Asencio’s inclusion gives Mourinho another card to play at the back in a squad that blends star power with depth.
