PSG's Last-Minute Collapse in Zion Suzuki Deal

PSG’s move for Zion Suzuki has fallen apart at the last moment, ripping up carefully laid plans for their goalkeeping department just as the deal seemed done.

The French champions had pushed negotiations with Parma to an advanced stage and struck an agreement in principle. A fee of around €35 million for the 23-year-old Japanese goalkeeper was in place, with both club and player on board. Only the fine print remained.

That is where it collapsed.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano and RMC, Suzuki’s agents stepped in late with fresh financial demands over commissions. PSG judged those demands excessive. The Paris hierarchy refused to bend, and talks crashed despite the framework of the transfer already being agreed.

The timing could hardly have been more dramatic. PSG had gone as far as booking Suzuki a flight to Paris last Saturday, expecting him to arrive, undergo his medical and sign his contract. Instead, the deal unravelled before he could even pack his bags.

The club had also explored a more complex route: signing Suzuki and immediately loaning him to Juventus for a season. That scenario disappeared two days ago when Juve abruptly broke off contact with PSG without offering a reason. With that, the last alternative pathway closed.

So PSG are back where they started between the posts. Matvey Safonov stays as undisputed No 1. Lucas Chevalier remains his understudy, waiting on the bench and in the market’s shadow, as the club decides whether to ride out the season with what they have or dive back into a goalkeeper hunt that has just burned them at the final hurdle.
