Patrick Vieira Urges Portugal to Drop Cristiano Ronaldo
Patrick Vieira believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s place in football history is edging into dangerous territory – and he’s urged Portugal boss Roberto Martinez to make the brutal call that could help protect it.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former France midfielder argued that Ronaldo should be dropped for Portugal’s next World Cup match against Uzbekistan, after the captain failed to score in the 1-1 draw with DR Congo.
For Vieira, this is no minor tactical tweak. It’s a test of Martinez’s authority.
“He has to think about the team first before thinking about Ronaldo,” the ex-Arsenal captain said, laying down the challenge to the Portugal manager. “So he will have to make a really strong decision not to start him if the team is better without him.”
That line cuts to the heart of the debate that has followed Ronaldo in the latter stages of his career: where is the balance between a legend’s status and a modern team’s needs? Portugal escaped with only a point against DR Congo, and Ronaldo’s blank on the scoresheet has sharpened the focus on his role.
Vieira’s concern stretches beyond one group-stage fixture. It touches the carefully built myth of one of football’s defining figures.
“I worry for him, his legacy will be spoiled a little bit if he kicks off and he gets taken off, because for two decades he has been an extraordinarily wonderful footballer.”
Two decades at the top, and now a warning from a fellow great. The numbers and the medals are already written, but the ending still isn’t. Martinez must decide whether Ronaldo starts against Uzbekistan – and Ronaldo must decide how he wants this final chapter to look.
