Nottingham Forest Sign Delap for £50m

Nottingham Forest have made their statement signing of the summer, completing a deal for Delap that could rise to £50m and handing the 23-year-old a contract through to 2031.

Forest will pay an initial £45m to Chelsea, with a further £5m due in add-ons. For Chelsea, it is sharp business: they bank an instant £20m profit just a year after prising the striker from Ipswich Town for around £30m in June 2025.

One season at Stamford Bridge. Then out. Now, a new home on the banks of the Trent.

Delap buys into Glasner’s vision

Delap arrives talking like a player who wants to build something, not just pass through.

"I really can't wait to get started, this is a massive club with a big history," he told Forest’s media after signing. He revealed conversations with head coach Oliver Glasner were key to the move.

"I spoke to the manager and I like his way, I think he can be the one to really help me develop and make that next step and hopefully I can bring goals here."

He is already picturing the noise.

"I can't wait to hear the noise at the City Ground and have the fans on my side because I know how loud and important they are. As a team we can build something really strong and the main aim is to challenge and be a top club in the Premier League."

Big words. Big fee. Now he has to live up to both.

A striker with scars – and serious upside

On paper, the move raises an obvious question: why spend so heavily on a forward who scored just once in the league last season?

Forest’s recruitment team are clearly betting that Delap’s body of work at Ipswich tells the truer story. In the 2024-25 campaign, he hit 12 league goals for a side that still went down, carrying much of the attacking burden in a struggling team.

He also posted 26 shot-ending carries that season – more than any other Premier League striker. That number underlines why clubs keep circling him: pace that stretches defences, power that shrugs off challenges, and a direct, aggressive style with the ball at his feet.

The pedigree runs in the family. Son of former Premier League defender Rory Delap, he brings a different kind of threat to his father’s famous long throw – this time from the heart of the attack.

Forest are not paying for last season at Chelsea. They are paying for the Ipswich version, and the version Glasner believes he can unlock.

Battle lines drawn up front

Life at the City Ground will not be comfortable for a striker who wants an easy ride. Delap walks straight into a crowded centre-forward department, joining Chris Wood, Igor Jesus and Arnaud Kalimuendo in a four-way fight for the No 9 role.

Wood offers experience and nous. Kalimuendo brings movement and sharp finishing. Igor Jesus adds flair. Delap arrives as the power forward with a price tag that screams “first choice” but guarantees nothing.

His first audition could hardly be tougher. Forest head to Anfield this weekend to face Liverpool, still smarting from back-to-back defeats to Leeds United in the Premier League opener and in the Carabao Cup.

Drop him into that cauldron, and the picture becomes clear: this is why Forest paid the money. They want a forward who relishes the scrap, who can run at defenders, hold his ground, and turn tight games.

The City Ground will demand that his physicality, his running and his finishing all add up to something more than promise. At £45m plus add-ons, the margin for patience shrinks fast.

Forest have made their move. Now it is Delap’s turn to show whether this is just another expensive gamble, or the moment a restless career finally explodes into life.
