Tyrell Malacia Joins FC Cincinnati from Manchester United

FC Cincinnati have made one of the statement moves of the MLS season, snapping up former Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer and tying him down through June 2027, with a club option for the 2027-28 campaign.

A 27-year-old Netherlands international with Premier League and Champions League mileage doesn’t often land in MLS without a transfer fee attached. Cincinnati pounced. The deal was confirmed on Friday, underlining the club’s intent to stay among the Eastern Conference’s heavyweights rather than drift back into the pack.

Cincinnati clear a lane for their new star

To get Malacia through the door, Cincinnati’s front office had to get creative with their roster puzzle. They moved to secure an extra international slot, acquiring it from St. Louis CITY SC in exchange for $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM).

That’s not a token move. It’s a clear signal that Malacia isn’t coming in as depth; he’s being treated as a cornerstone. General Manager Chris Albright made no effort to hide his excitement, describing the club as “excited to add a player of Tyrell's experience,” a line that neatly captures how highly they rate the Dutchman’s pedigree.

The expectation is obvious: Malacia walks straight into the heart of Cincinnati’s defensive plans, giving them a high-level, European-tested full-back for the prime of his career.

Closing the Manchester United chapter

This transfer also draws a line under a turbulent spell at Manchester United. Malacia arrived at Old Trafford from Feyenoord in 2022 and initially impressed under Erik ten Hag, bringing energy, aggression, and bite down the left flank.

Then the injuries came.

Fitness issues repeatedly stalled his progress, disrupting his rhythm and limiting his availability just as he seemed ready to cement a starting role. Even so, he still managed 50 appearances for the 20-time English champions, featuring in both the Premier League and European competitions and proving he could live at that level when fit.

Now he gets a reset. No lingering shadows, no constant questions about his place in the pecking order. Just a new league, a new locker room, and a club eager to build around his experience.

European steel for the “Orange and Blue”

Cincinnati aren’t just signing a name; they’re importing know-how. Malacia arrives with more than 250 professional appearances in European football, having gone up against some of the most dangerous wingers on the planet in the Premier League and Champions League.

He also returns to MLS fresh from success back home. A recent loan spell at PSV Eindhoven saw him contribute to an Eredivisie title in the 2024-25 season, adding another major honor to his record.

On the international stage, Malacia has already broken into the Netherlands senior setup, earning nine caps. He was included in the Dutch squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the team pushed through to the quarter-finals before bowing out in dramatic fashion.
