Nicolo Tresoldi's International Future: Germany or Italy?

Nicolo Tresoldi’s international future is still hanging in the balance, but for now Germany keep him in their colours.

The Club Brugge forward, already capped 24 times at U21 level for Germany, has yet to decide whether his senior career will run in black and white or in Azzurri blue. Eligible for both Germany and Italy, the 22-year-old is in no rush to close any doors.

"This is not a question that needs to be asked of me, but I have spoken to him and he said that he still can't make a decision," Germany U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo told Kicker.

For the moment, though, Tresoldi has chosen to stay in the German setup and continue with the U21s.

"And that is a great sign for us," Di Salvo added, welcoming the fact that one of his key attacking options remains on board, even as the tug-of-war at senior level looms in the background.

Di Salvo framed Tresoldi’s dilemma as part of a wider shift in modern football.

"I think the world has changed. 20 or 30 years ago, players didn't have to make these decisions at all," he said. "But the world has become more global, and many players have the opportunity to play for a second or even a third country. If they need time, you have to give them that time."

Tresoldi’s story reflects exactly that global landscape.

Born in Cagliari, Italy, he is the son of an Italian father and an Argentine mother of Italian descent. At 13, he moved with his family to Germany, joined Hannover 96 and came through their ranks. He later acquired German citizenship, opening the door to his current role with Germany’s youth teams.

For now, Tresoldi remains a weapon for Di Salvo’s U21 side. The real decision, the one that will define his senior international career, still waits somewhere down the line.
