Mourinho's Transfer Demands: Real Madrid's Next Steps

Jose Mourinho is not a man who deals in “enough”.

Real Madrid have already moved aggressively in the market, yet the head coach is pushing for more, refusing to let a fast start drift into complacency at the Bernabeu.

Four major deals are already lined up. Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva have all agreed to join Madrid, their arrivals delayed only by their commitments at the 2026 World Cup. They will walk into a dressing room already reshaped in Mourinho’s image – but he wants the door left open for at least one, and ideally two, more.

Mourinho’s blueprint: power at the back, brains in midfield

According to Marca, Mourinho has formally asked the club for two further signings: a second centre-back to partner or compete with Konate, and a midfielder in the mould of Luka Modric, someone who can dictate the game’s rhythm and carry Madrid through tight nights.

These are not vague wishes. They are specific demands, backed by specific names.

Mourinho has already driven the captures of Konate, Dumfries, Cucurella and Silva, and he intends to keep that influence over the next phase of recruitment. For the heart of his defence, he has put forward two elite options: Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck. For midfield, he has identified Enzo Fernandez and Mateus Fernandes as the profiles that best fit his vision of a Modric-style controller.

The shortlist is tight. The expectations are high.

Bastoni or Schlotterbeck? Fernandez in pole

Inside the club, there is still no clear hierarchy between Bastoni and Schlotterbeck. The German has dominated recent headlines, his name repeatedly linked with a Bernabeu switch, but an untimely injury has clouded the picture. Ruled out for six to eight weeks, Schlotterbeck suddenly looks a risk for a team that wants to hit the ground running.

That could tilt the balance towards Bastoni, a defender with the pedigree and temperament Mourinho has often trusted in his back lines. Yet, as things stand, no definitive decision has been made.

In midfield, the situation feels more defined. Enzo Fernandez is viewed as the leading candidate, the closest thing on the market to the blend of passing range, personality and tactical intelligence that Modric has given Madrid for over a decade. A move from Chelsea, though, is far from straightforward and does not appear imminent. Mateus Fernandes remains on the list, but very much as the alternative rather than the headline act.

So the plan is clear, but the execution still hangs in the balance.

What is not in doubt is Mourinho’s intent. The squad is already being rebuilt, yet he continues to push, convinced that one more defender and one more midfielder could turn a strong summer into a defining one. Real Madrid’s work in the market is far from finished – and their head coach will not rest until those final pieces fall into place.
