Jose Mourinho Secures Tchouameni's Future at Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho has barely had time to settle back into his office at Valdebebas, but he has already shut the door on one of Manchester United’s most ambitious transfer dreams.
Real Madrid have tied down Aurelien Tchouameni to a new long-term contract, a move that slams shut a window United had been quietly trying to prise open all summer. The France international, 26, is understood to have committed to another five years in the Spanish capital, ending any realistic hope of a Premier League raid for one of Europe’s most complete midfielders.
United’s midfield rebuild meets a hard stop
The timing is brutal from a United perspective. News of Tchouameni’s renewal surfaced within hours of the club finalising a £50million agreement with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, who is due to undergo a medical today (Thursday). Santos is part of a wider recruitment push in the middle of the pitch, not the conclusion of it.
United have spent the summer casting a wide net. Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Felix Nmecha and Sander Berge have all been tracked. Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes were explored, too, before price tags pushed them out of reach. Ederson is also set for a medical now that Brazil’s World Cup campaign is over.
This is not a luxury refurb. It is a necessity. Even before Manuel Ugarte’s injury at the World Cup, United wanted multiple midfielders. With Ugarte sidelined and Kobbie Mainoo currently the only fully fit central midfielder, the club may be forced into signing a third option. Tchouameni, though, will not be it.
Tchouameni chooses Madrid – and Mourinho
Despite the noise around him, Tchouameni never really wavered. According to RMC Sport, the former Monaco man was determined to stay at Madrid, even as approaches arrived from elsewhere, most notably Old Trafford. There had been speculation that Madrid might be tempted to cash in, reshaping a midfield already stacked with talent.
Instead, the hierarchy made his renewal a priority. Mourinho, back in the Bernabeu dugout a month, will now build with Tchouameni at the heart of his plans rather than as a sale to fund them.
Madrid have already made four signings this summer. Only one is a midfielder, and Bernardo Silva is not a direct rival for Tchouameni’s place. The Frenchman remains the reference point in that engine room, the player Mourinho trusts to anchor his side as a new cycle begins.
For United, it is another reminder of where they currently sit in the European pecking order. They can tempt, they can offer big fees and big wages, but prising a cornerstone out of Madrid – especially under Mourinho – is another level entirely.
Madrid draw a line on Enzo talk
The Tchouameni decision fits a broader pattern at Real Madrid this summer: control the narrative, control the squad.
Amid growing speculation linking the club with Enzo Fernández, Madrid did something they rarely feel compelled to do. They issued a formal statement, publicly and emphatically distancing themselves from the Chelsea midfielder.
“In light of the information and statements that have emerged in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid C. F. in the player Enzo Fernández,” the statement read, “the club wishes to state that it has not made any efforts, either directly or indirectly, aimed at signing the aforementioned player and, furthermore, has no intention of pursuing such an operation.
“Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernández, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely recognised, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship.
“Precisely out of respect for an institution like Chelsea FC and the principles of institutional loyalty that have always guided Real Madrid's actions, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny these speculations, which are unfounded and do not reflect reality.
“Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the absence of any action by the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and only serves to create confusion among fans and unnecessarily harm the entities and individuals involved.”
The message could not be clearer. No Enzo. No Tchouameni exit. No major upheaval at the base of Madrid’s midfield.
Mourinho’s quiet victory, United’s lingering problem
Strip away the noise and this is a classic Mourinho win. Keep the core, protect the spine, close ranks. Tchouameni stays, the speculation ends, and the coach walks into the new season with his preferred holding midfielder locked down long term.
For United, the picture is far less settled. They have Santos incoming, Ederson on the way to a medical, and a shopping list that keeps getting revisited. They need numbers, but they also need a leader in that role – the kind of all-phase midfielder Tchouameni has become in Madrid white.
They went looking for a statement signing in the middle of the pitch. Mourinho and Madrid have made their own statement instead.
