Declan Rice Isolates as England Faces Illness Scare Before World Cup Quarter-Final

Declan Rice has been separated from the rest of the England squad after falling ill this week, with FA staff moving quickly to prevent a bug from spreading on the eve of a World Cup quarter-final.

The Arsenal midfielder, already managing hamstring and lower-back issues, has now missed two consecutive training sessions as England prepare to face Norway on Saturday. Medical staff have placed him in isolation away from the main group in an effort to ringfence the sickness and keep the camp stable at a critical point in the tournament.

For Gareth Southgate and his staff, it is an unwelcome complication. Rice is a cornerstone of England’s midfield, a player who rarely comes off the pitch and who pushed through the pain barrier throughout last season at the Emirates Stadium. Now, as the stakes rise, his involvement against Norway is uncertain.

Inside the camp, there is quiet confidence that the illness has been contained. The decision to isolate Rice is viewed as precaution as much as necessity, a move designed to avoid a potentially destabilising outbreak rather than a sign of wider trouble. Still, losing him, even temporarily, is the kind of disruption no manager wants this deep into a World Cup.

While England juggle fitness and illness, Arsenal are watching closely from afar.

Mikel Arteta already knew Rice would report late for pre-season because of his World Cup commitments. The Gunners begin their summer programme in Girona on August 1, but Rice will not be there, nor will Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze or Noni Madueke. All players involved in the tournament have a three-week break once their country is knocked out, meaning the England contingent will miss Arsenal’s opening pre-season fixture.

If England reach the semi-finals, the knock-on effect grows. Rice and his England teammates would almost certainly sit out Arsenal’s second pre-season game as well, against Real Betis in Dublin on August 5. For a club aiming to start fast next season, that is a sizeable chunk of preparation without some of its most influential figures.

And it is not just the England group Arsenal must plan around. Martin Odegaard is away with Norway, William Saliba with France, David Raya with Spain, while Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino are also tied up with Spain. Leandro Trossard is on duty with Belgium. All are expected to miss the early days of pre-season as their international schedules and subsequent holidays play out.

France have already secured their place in the last four with a 2-0 win over Morocco, locking Saliba into an extended summer. Spain and Belgium meet tonight for a semi-final spot of their own, a tie that will determine when Raya, Zubimendi, Merino and Trossard can even think about club matters again.

For now, though, the spotlight sits on one man in a hotel room, away from his teammates. England need Rice fit and available. Arsenal need him healthy and ready to reset after a long, bruising season.

Whether he walks out against Norway on Saturday could shape both campaigns before they have truly begun.
