Mike Dean's Controversial Refereeing Revelations Spark Outrage

Mike Dean has sparked fury across English football after admitting he used to “joke about” and play “games” while refereeing Premier League matches.

The 58-year-old, who took charge of 553 Premier League fixtures before retiring in 2022, made the revelations on the Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party podcast, describing how he would sometimes turn top-flight games into private challenges to stave off boredom.

‘See how long we can go without blowing the whistle’

Speaking to former England striker Jamie Vardy, Dean detailed how he and fellow officials would set themselves targets during matches.

“There used to be games that we used to have, as a laugh,” Dean said. “We used to say something like: ‘We’ll kick off now, right? See how long we can go without blowing the whistle.’

“Done that a few times in the Premier League, before VAR obviously. Went 20 to 25 minutes without blowing a whistle a few times. Let it go, let it go, let it go.”

Dean also claimed he once turned his positioning into a running joke, challenging himself to stay in the centre circle for as long as possible while the game unfolded around him.

“I used to do another thing in the Premier League. I used to stand in the centre circle and see how long I could stay in the centre circle before I had to leave,” he said.

“That was just me joking about. But the lads used to be on the line saying, ‘You can’t’. I said, ‘I’ll try it’. I just used to kind of run around, kind of go, but don’t go out of it. Got to about 15 minutes once in one game, without leaving the centre circle.”

Bemusement inside refereeing ranks

Dean’s stories have not gone down well within the modern refereeing set-up.

Those currently involved in officiating are understood to have greeted the comments with bemusement, and some have privately questioned the lack of specific detail or verifiable context behind his anecdotes.

Refereeing in England is now overseen by Pro Ref – the recently rebranded body formerly known as Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). The organisation has been approached for comment on Dean’s remarks.

If there was any suggestion Dean’s podcast appearance would be taken as light-hearted nostalgia, Gabriel Agbonlahor quickly killed it.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking on talkSPORT, launched a scathing attack on the ex-referee.

“He’s trying to be funny but it’s not funny. You’re not funny, Mike Dean, that sums you up,” Agbonlahor said.

“He’s throwing himself under the bus. This is the Premier League. Are you a child?

“It doesn’t sit right with me at all. I was thinking, ‘Mike Dean managed a lot of games I played in’. One word to describe him, I’d say, is a prat.”

At a time when trust in officiating is already under intense scrutiny, Dean’s decision to turn old war stories into entertainment leaves a sharp question hanging over the game: how many players and managers will now look back on those matches and wonder what exactly the referee was really focused on?
