Manchester United Target Liverpool's Vincent Joseph Amid Academy Rivalry

The transfer lines between Manchester United and Liverpool have been effectively frozen for more than 60 years. Senior players do not cross that divide. Not directly. Not anymore.

But the academies? That is where the rivalry has quietly found a new front.

In 2021, United persuaded winger Ethan Ennis to walk away from Liverpool’s offer and head down the M62 to Carrington. It was a small deal in the grand scheme of things, yet symbolically loaded: one giant poaching from the other’s youth ranks.

Ennis is still on United’s books after loan spells with Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town. Now, United are trying to repeat the trick.

United move for Vincent Joseph

According to The Secret Scout, a well-regarded voice on youth football and academy movement, Liverpool’s 16-year-old striker Vincent Joseph “looks set to leave” Anfield. His omission from the club’s latest list of scholars has only sharpened that sense.

United, the report states, “hold strong interest” in the teenager. They are not alone. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have also sent scouts on several occasions to watch him.

Joseph has been turning heads for more than just his birth certificate. The young forward has built a reputation for his physical presence and smart link-up play, traits that are increasingly rare in a traditional number 9 at that age. For England’s U16s, he has already stepped into the international environment, and last season he made two appearances in the U18 Premier League, scoring three times. Two games, three goals. Enough to make people sit up.

“Interesting to see where he ends up. Not many top number 9s around. He will be in demand,” The Secret Scout added. It was less prediction than statement of fact.

For Liverpool, losing a promising striker to their fiercest rivals would sting. For United, it would be another sign that their academy pull remains strong, even when the first team has spent years searching for consistency.

Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong also on United’s radar

Joseph is not the only teenager drawing admiring glances from Old Trafford.

United and Bayern are both understood to be among the clubs that admire Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong. The 20-year-old is described as a towering presence at the back, a defensive prospect with the kind of profile top clubs want to lock down early.

A recent report relayed by The Peoples Person claimed Acheampong has landed firmly on United’s radar. Chelsea’s stance, though, is clear: they have rejected approaches from several unnamed clubs and consider him untouchable.

That word matters. Untouchable means Chelsea see him as part of their future, not a trading chip. For United and Bayern, it means admiration may have to remain just that for now.

INEOS plan: marquee names and future stars

Much of the noise around United since Champions League qualification has centred on marquee signings. Big names. Big fees. A statement that INEOS want the club back among Europe’s elite, not just in the competition but competing deep into it.

Yet the pursuit of players like Joseph and the admiration for Acheampong point to a broader strategy. United’s hierarchy are not simply chasing short-term fixes; they are also trying to stockpile high-ceiling talent who can shape the club’s next decade.

If they manage to prise Joseph away from Liverpool, it will not just be another youth signing. It will be a shot fired in a rivalry that never really sleeps, only changes shape.

And if Chelsea really do keep Acheampong off limits, how long before the next defensive prodigy appears on United’s list as they try to rebuild, not just for the next season, but for the next generation?
