Manchester United Target Josip Stanisic as Defensive Solution

Manchester United spent the summer ripping up their midfield at Michael Carrick’s request. Three new faces arrived – Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba – while a late push for Louis Page fell flat on deadline day as INEOS chose not to go all-in.

Twelve months earlier, the co-owners had poured their resources into the attack. Logic around Old Trafford now says the defence is next in line for surgery.

Carrick wanted more this summer. He did not get it. The club, 20-time champions of England, decided to sit tight at the back and ride out another season with a group of defenders who, in truth, are mostly playing for their futures. Only two are considered truly safe. Everyone else is under scrutiny.

In that context, United’s interest in Josip Stanisic makes sense.

United eye Bayern’s defensive Swiss army knife

United have long had a soft spot for versatility, for players who can plug gaps and still look like specialists. Stanisic fits that mould almost perfectly.

The Bayern Munich defender, a Croatia international, can operate anywhere across the backline. Right-back is his natural home, but he has the frame and timing to step inside as a centre-back and the balance to cover on the left, helped by his comfort on both feet.

His numbers from last season underline that flexibility. Stanisic made 43 appearances in all competitions: 26 at right-back, 15 at left-back and 2 in the middle. No fuss, no drama, just reliable minutes in three roles for a club that expects to win every week.

It is no surprise, then, that he has drawn admiring glances from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

A crowded race for Stanisic

According to Fussballdaten, Manchester United are one of several heavyweights monitoring Stanisic’s situation closely. PSG, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Liverpool are all in the frame as well, turning any move into a straight fight among the elite.

The problem is not just the competition. It is Bayern.

Stanisic is tied to the Bundesliga champions until 2029, a long contract that hands the German side all the leverage they need. Bayern are not expected to even pick up the phone unless bids land in the region of £47 million to £56 million. Other reports suggest they will look for at least €55 million to €65 million just to start serious negotiations, with performance-related bonuses and a sell-on clause likely to be part of any package.

For a club of United’s size, the fee alone should not be an insurmountable obstacle. The question is different: is Stanisic willing to leave?

At the Allianz Arena he plays, regularly and in big games. He has Bundesliga and European experience that United, according to those same reports, particularly value as they search for extra depth at right-back and centre-back. Walking away from that, especially with a long contract and a defined role, is no simple decision.

INEOS’ transfer blueprint under the spotlight

There is another wrinkle. INEOS have made it clear they prefer players proven in the Premier League. Stanisic is not. His education has been in Germany and on the European stage, not in England’s uniquely relentless calendar.

That stance could complicate any pursuit. On paper, Stanisic looks like the kind of multi-functional defender who could help reshape United’s backline for years. In practice, he sits at the crossroads of three hard realities: Bayern’s demands, fierce competition from other giants, and INEOS’ own recruitment rules.

If United truly intend to overhaul their defence next summer, the question is simple: do they bend their model for a player like Stanisic, or watch him strengthen a rival instead?
