Manchester United Set to Spend £80m on Midfield Rebuild Under Carrick

Manchester United’s summer plans are accelerating – and they will not be cheap.

The club are prepared to pay around £80million to land their next major target as Michael Carrick pushes ahead with a significant overhaul of his squad. With Champions League football returning to Old Trafford next season, the message from the dugout is clear: United cannot stand still.

Carrick has already moved to reshape his midfield. A deal to bring Atalanta’s Ederson to Manchester has reportedly been agreed, a statement signing for the engine room and a clear nod to the intensity and control the manager wants at the heart of his team.

But one midfielder will not be enough.

Casemiro’s departure has ripped a sizeable hole through the centre of the pitch, stripping United of experience and defensive presence in front of the back four. Carrick, a former master of that role himself, knows exactly how exposed a side can look without the right balance in that area. United are pushing on with plans for a second midfield arrival, with work already under way on another deal as the club look to rebuild the spine of the team in one window.

The fee being discussed – around £80m – underlines both the scale of the rebuild and the level of competition they face in the market. United are not alone in chasing elite midfield talent, and any hesitation risks losing ground to their Premier League and European rivals. This is the going rate for players who can change the rhythm of a side and drag a team through Champions League nights.

While the recruitment team focus on incomings, the club’s existing core is also taking shape in a different way.

Harry Maguire’s immediate future at international level has taken another hit, but the Manchester United defender is already turning the setback into something else entirely. Left out of Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for the World Cup – his second straight major tournament missed after injury ruled him out of Euro 2024 – the 33-year-old will not be disappearing from view.

Instead, he is set for a prominent role off the pitch.

According to The Athletic, Maguire is due to appear as a guest on The Rest is Football podcast during the tournament. The show, hosted by Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, has become one of the most influential voices in the modern game, blending insight, nostalgia and sharp analysis.

Maguire is expected to be one of a number of high-profile guests dropping into the studio, which will be based overlooking New York’s Times Square for a 40-episode run during the competition. It is a far cry from the pressure of knockout football, but it will keep him firmly in the conversation at a time when his England career faces serious questions.

On one side, then, United are preparing to spend heavily to shape Carrick’s first great midfield. On the other, one of their most scrutinised defenders is stepping into the media glare while his international story stalls.

The transfer window will decide how quickly Carrick’s new-look United can take shape. The real question is whether an £80m statement and a rebuilt midfield will be enough to turn Champions League qualification into a genuine challenge for major honours.
