Manchester United Seek Lift from Luke Shaw After Derby Defeat

Manchester United return to Old Trafford tonight for a Carabao Cup tie with Brighton, still nursing the bruises of a bitter derby defeat and clinging to the hope that Luke Shaw can help steady a shaky start to the season.

City’s 1-0 win at the weekend, sealed by a controversial Erling Haaland strike that United felt should have been ruled out, has left the mood raw. The performance exposed familiar defensive frailties. The reaction now comes under the floodlights, in a competition that suddenly feels like an important release valve.

Shaw and De Ligt near key comebacks

The biggest boost could come at left-back. Shaw is believed to be close to a return and is in contention to feature against the Seagulls. Even a short outing would matter. United have missed his balance in possession and his recovery pace out of it.

At centre-back, there is more encouraging news. Matthijs de Ligt is also closing in on a comeback after being sidelined since November with a back problem. His absence has been painfully obvious.
