Manchester United Eye Edmond Tapsoba for £43m Amid Premier League Competition

Manchester United will have to pay around £43million to prise Edmond Tapsoba out of Bayer Leverkusen, with Newcastle and Tottenham also pushing hard for the defender.

Leverkusen do not want to lose their captain. But they have made one thing clear: a “suitable financial offer” changes the conversation. For now, that figure sits at roughly £43m, with Premier League interest refusing to go away.

Premier League battle for Leverkusen leader

Tapsoba has emerged as one of the most coveted centre-backs in Europe. According to fussballdaten, United, Newcastle and Tottenham are all in regular contact with the Burkina Faso international’s camp as they assess what it would take to get a deal done.

The outlet describes the 27-year-old as “tailor-made” for a side that wants to build quickly from the back and defend big spaces. In other words, exactly the kind of modern centre-half top clubs crave.

Leverkusen know it. So do the Premier League.

Tapsoba is central to Leverkusen’s plans. He scored five goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances last season and signed a new long-term contract earlier this year, tying him to the club until 2031. That deal puts the German champions in a position of strength, but it has not cooled talk over his future.

Reports in Germany say the defender’s openness to a move has only fuelled speculation, with Newcastle viewing him as a ready-made defensive leader.

United watching – but with other priorities

United’s interest is not new. The club were linked with Tapsoba in 2024, a summer in which they instead brought in Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt to bolster the heart of the defence.

This year, the focus has shifted elsewhere. Michael Carrick’s rebuild has so far centred on left-back and central midfield, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos already through the door at Old Trafford.

Even so, United have not ruled out another addition in the middle of the park. They are also pushing to strengthen the left flank, where Lewis Hall has been a long-standing target. Newcastle, though, have made their stance firm: Hall is not for sale.

A similar message has arrived from Club Brugge regarding Joaquin Seys, shutting down another potential option on that side of the pitch.

Carrick wants more before window shuts

Carrick has been open about his desire to keep adding to the squad before the deadline.

“We've improved the group,” he said. “We've improved the squad in different ways. Balance, quality and the direction we want to go in.

“So the players that we've brought in, I think we've done really good business and we've got some top, top, top players. So we're delighted with that. We always want to improve.

“We want more, we need more. We keep looking forward to how we can do that. So that never stops. We're conscious of that and we've got to keep pushing.”

Whether that “more” stretches to a £43m move for Tapsoba, with Newcastle and Tottenham already jostling for position, will say plenty about how aggressively United are prepared to move in the final weeks of the window.
