Manchester United Nears Double Signing Amid Premier League Transfer Activity
Manchester United are moving quickly through their summer business, with a double deal edging towards completion and a third signing not far behind.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United are finalising terms for goalkeeper Karl Darlow and midfielder Andrey Santos, while long-term target Ederson is set to complete the final stages of his medical. If all goes to plan, three new arrivals could be through the door within days.
Darlow’s move carries the sharpest edge. The 33-year-old is on the verge of crossing the Pennines in a controversial switch from Leeds United to Old Trafford after turning down a new contract at Elland Road. A player leaving Leeds for Manchester United will never pass quietly, and this one is already being framed as a betrayal in some quarters.
Andrey Santos, the highly rated midfielder, is also close to signing as United look to add legs and energy in the middle of the pitch. Ederson, a target throughout the summer, is now at the final hurdle of his medical checks, with United confident of wrapping up a deal that would reshape their midfield options.
Goalkeeper Carousel
A goalkeeper carousel is starting to spin around the Premier League at the same time.
Everton are weighing up a move for Sam Johnstone, according to the Mail. The former Manchester United keeper has made 27 appearances for Wolves since joining two years ago, but their relegation changes everything. Dropping out of the top flight often forces uncomfortable decisions; in Johnstone’s case, it could mean both a desire for an immediate return to Premier League football and a reduced fee to make that happen.
Everton, though, are not ready to jump until their own situation clears. Mark Travers, currently second-choice at Goodison Park, is attracting interest from Wrexham and newly-promoted Coventry City. Only when the Toffees know whether Travers is staying or going are they expected to move decisively for Johnstone.
Newcastle United's Contingency Plan
While the goalkeepers circle, Newcastle United are bracing for a different kind of problem: life after Bruno Guimaraes.
Brazilian outlet Band Sports reports that Newcastle are already working on a contingency plan should their midfield talisman depart. The idea is simple enough: one Selecao international out, one in. Danilo Santos of Botafogo has emerged as a priority target, with the Magpies said to be keen on his versatility and ability to operate across the midfield.
Danilo, 25, returned to Brazil after his spell at Nottingham Forest and has since pushed himself into the conversation as one of the standout midfielders in the Brazilian top flight. Newcastle see him as a player who could soften the blow if Bruno is prised away.
That risk is very real. L’Equipe, via the Standard, claims Bruno Guimaraes has already agreed personal terms on a five-year deal with Arsenal. The London club are now expected, according to the Standard, to test Newcastle’s resolve with an official bid. Newcastle insist their captain is not for sale and point to the two years remaining on his contract, but insistence only goes so far when serious money hits the table.
Liverpool's Move
On Merseyside, Liverpool are preparing their own move in the market’s upper reaches.
TEAMtalk reports that the club are readying a bid for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh, viewed as one of the alternatives to Yan Diomande. Brighton, never shy in their valuations, are said to be demanding £80 million for the attacker.
The path to Minteh could be cleared by rival activity. Manchester United’s reported interest in Crysencio Summerville may drag attention elsewhere, potentially leaving Liverpool with a clearer run at the Brighton man if they decide to meet the asking price.
Across the division, plans are being drawn, medicals scheduled, and replacements quietly lined up. United’s double swoop, Everton’s goalkeeping puzzle, Newcastle’s Bruno dilemma, Liverpool’s push for Minteh — all of it points to a familiar question as the window gathers pace: who will still be standing in the same colours when the music finally stops?
