A meteoric rise

Behind the scenes, the mood has shifted sharply. Gabriel did not train with Michael Carrick’s squad at the end of last week amid what are understood to be issues in the relationship between his family and the club.

The precise nature of those issues has not been made public. United sources insist they are unsure how the situation has escalated to this point, but the outcome is stark: Gabriel has lodged a formal notice asking to cancel his registration with immediate effect.

United can challenge that request, and all indications are that they intend to.
