Manchester United Pursue Alex Scott Amid £80m Valuation
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has a new leading man: Alex Scott.
The Bournemouth playmaker has moved to the top of United’s shortlist for the summer window, with club reporter Samuel Luckhurst revealing that the Old Trafford hierarchy have not ruled out a bid despite an £80 million valuation from the Cherries.
United have been trawling the market for midfield reinforcements and Scott’s name has never drifted far from the conversation. The 20-year-old has quickly grown into one of the most admired young midfielders in the Premier League since arriving at Bournemouth, and his rise has not gone unnoticed across the division.
United have already missed out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, both snapped up for hefty fees by Tottenham and Manchester City. Those deals underlined the current market reality and, crucially, United’s reluctance to be dragged into bidding wars they feel do not represent value.
That caution has a cost. Targets are slipping away.
Scott, though, remains firmly in their sights. Luckhurst reports that, despite Bournemouth’s stance and the £80m price tag, United have not closed the door on a move and remain in the race for his signature. Internally, he is now viewed as their preferred midfield option.
Bournemouth are not passive observers in this. The south-coast club are pushing to tie Scott down to a new contract, and any fresh deal is expected to include a release clause. That would give them protection on price and clarity on any future exit, while forcing suitors like United to make a decisive call rather than test the waters.
United's Dilemma
At Old Trafford, the dilemma is clear. United want to be smarter in the market, avoid the overinflated fees that have defined previous windows, and rebuild with a more disciplined approach. Yet they also cannot afford another summer of near-misses in key positions.
At some point, they will have to pay for the player they truly believe in.
Whether Scott becomes that statement signing is still unclear. What is not in doubt is the urgency: United need at least one midfielder through the door in the coming weeks. The question now is simple – do they finally push the button on Alex Scott, or risk watching another priority target disappear from view?
