Newcastle Close to €60m Deal for Johan Manzambi

Newcastle United are on the brink of landing one of Europe’s most coveted young midfielders, with a €60m agreement in place with Freiburg for 20-year-old Johan Manzambi, according to Sky Germany.

The deal is understood to be agreed between the clubs, with Newcastle now ironing out the final details with the player’s camp. Manzambi is expected to sign a long-term contract on Tyneside, a statement signing for a club intent on accelerating their rise rather than easing into it.

Newcastle Win the Race

Aston Villa had pushed to be in the conversation. Amadou Onana’s ACL injury at the 2026 FIFA World Cup forced them into the market, and Manzambi quickly emerged as a prime target. Villa’s interest was real, their need even greater, but Newcastle have moved with greater conviction and financial muscle.

The result: Newcastle stand in pole position, Villa left to reassess.

A Midfielder on the Rise

This is not a punt on potential alone. Manzambi arrives off the back of a breakout season and a standout summer.

For Freiburg last term, he produced five goals and four assists in 27 Bundesliga appearances, impressive numbers for a 20-year-old operating from midfield. His form carried into the international stage: three goals and two assists at this summer’s tournament, a driving force in Switzerland’s run.

Right now, though, he can only watch. Manzambi is currently sidelined for Switzerland, missing out as his teammates prepare for a quarter-final showdown with Argentina after edging past Colombia on penalties.

A Big Fee, a Bigger Statement

€60m for a 20-year-old midfielder underlines how Newcastle see their future. This is the kind of signing that shapes a midfield for years, not months. A player already proven in the Bundesliga, already delivering on the international stage, now set to test himself in the Premier League’s intensity.

If Newcastle complete the final details and get Manzambi through the door, they won’t just have beaten Aston Villa to a target.

They will have signalled, once again, that they intend to shop at the very top of the market – and expect their new signing to grow into one of its defining midfielders.
