Manchester City Signs Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for €95million

Manchester City have struck a deal with Lille to sign Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi in one of the standout moves of the summer window.

City will pay an initial €95million (£81.4m; $110m), with a further €5m (£4.3m; $5.8m) tied to performance-related add-ons. The 18-year-old will sign a contract running to 2031, with an option to extend for another year, tying one of Europe’s most coveted young midfielders to the Etihad for the long term.

City rip up their old midfield — and build a new one

This is not just another youth signing. It comes in the middle of a major reshaping of Pep Guardiola’s midfield.

Rodri has already left for Barcelona in a deal worth an initial €60m (£51.2m; $68.8m), ending an era in which he was the metronome of City’s play. Bernardo Silva has departed at the end of his contract. Tijjani Reijnders has moved on to Al Qadsiah. The Athletic has also reported that Newcastle United are in talks to sign Nico Gonzalez.

The exits have been heavy. The response has been just as bold.

Elliot Anderson has arrived from Nottingham Forest in a £116m ($153m) transfer, and now Bouaddi joins as the latest piece of a rebuilt engine room that looks far younger and more dynamic than the one that delivered City’s recent dominance.

A World Cup coming-of-age

Bouaddi’s price tag reflects more than potential. He arrives in Manchester off the back of a breakout World Cup with Morocco this summer.

He started five of their six matches as Morocco surged to the quarterfinals, showing the maturity of a seasoned international rather than a teenager. In the group-stage draw against Brazil, he recorded more touches than any of his teammates in a 1-1 stalemate, demanding the ball and dictating tempo on the biggest stage.

Those performances accelerated the interest. The Athletic reported in July that City were pushing hard for a deal while Bouaddi weighed up whether to stay in France or make the leap. The decision is now made.

Lille’s youngest ever, now City’s latest project

At club level, Bouaddi has been on a fast track since he first stepped into Lille’s academy.

He became Lille’s youngest-ever player at 16 years and three days, debuting in a Conference League tie in September 2023. That early trust turned into a regular role. By the 2025-26 campaign, his third full senior season, he had racked up 42 appearances in all competitions, adding one assist as Lille finished third in Ligue 1 and secured Champions League qualification.

He was originally brought to Lille in 2021 by Luis Carlos, now Paris Saint-Germain’s football advisor — another indication of how early top-level recruiters identified his talent.

From France prospect to Morocco mainstay

Bouaddi’s international story has already taken a sharp turn.

He represented France from under-16 through under-21 level, progressing through one of the most competitive youth systems in world football. In May, he switched allegiance to Morocco and made his senior debut, quickly establishing himself as a central figure in Walid Regragui’s plans.

That choice, and his World Cup form, have now propelled him into the heart of Manchester City’s next cycle.

The fee, the contract length, the timing after Rodri and Bernardo’s departures — everything about this move says the same thing: City are not just signing a prospect. They are betting that Ayyoub Bouaddi can grow into the player who defines their midfield for the next decade.
