Manchester City Pursues Enzo Fernandez Transfer from Chelsea

Manchester City have opened talks with Chelsea over a blockbuster move for Enzo Fernandez, with Enzo Maresca driving an ambitious attempt to reshape his midfield around the Argentina World Cup winner.

City have made Fernandez their priority target and, according to GIVEMESPORT, believe a deal can be struck before the window shuts. The player is understood to be keen on the switch and on reuniting with Maresca, under whom he operated higher up the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s stance hardens after missed deadline

Chelsea’s position is clear: Fernandez can go, but only on their terms.

The London club had set a strict deadline of Friday, August 14 at 5pm for a written £120 million bid. That came and went without a response from City, who were instead tying up Rodri’s move to Barcelona.

Despite the missed cut-off, City never felt that was the end of the story. Inside the Etihad, there has long been a belief Chelsea would still sell before the window closes, especially with Fernandez open to leaving.

Now, with the self-imposed deadline gone, Chelsea are expected to push for either a higher overall fee than £120m or a more favourable payment structure than the one discussed before August 14. The sense from Stamford Bridge is that if they are to lose a cornerstone of their midfield, they will be paid accordingly.

Record-breaking territory

Any agreement is likely to land in historic territory for English football.

If the final package for Fernandez climbs beyond the £125m Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer, the 25-year-old would become the most expensive sale in Premier League history.

A divided Chelsea crowd

Fernandez’s situation has already spilled onto the pitch.

He came off the bench in Chelsea’s 3-2 win at Fulham on Monday, greeted by a mixed reaction from the away end. Some supporters booed. Others immediately tried to drown that out by chanting his name.

The reasons behind the jeers are not entirely clear. Frustration at his desire to leave is one theory. Lingering resentment from Argentina’s elimination of England at the 2026 World Cup is another. Whatever the motive, it underlines how complicated his Chelsea exit could become if talks drag on.

What Chelsea do next

Chelsea will not let Fernandez walk without a plan, but that plan may not involve a like-for-like replacement.

The club are open to strengthening in midfield, and Alex Scott is a player they admire. Bournemouth, though, expect Scott to stay. Chelsea have not followed up since a £64m bid was rejected earlier in the summer, and there has been no fresh contact between the clubs.

That leaves the door open for a different type of signing. Under Maresca at Chelsea, Fernandez often played as an eight and even as a ten, a sharp contrast to the more disciplined six role he occupied at Benfica. That tactical shift gives Chelsea some flexibility: replace the control of a deep-lying midfielder, or chase more creativity higher up the pitch.

If Pedro Neto also leaves, that calculation changes again. Chelsea are ready to listen to offers close to £100m for the winger, and his departure could push them towards a central or right-sided attacking midfielder or forward instead of a pure holding player.
