Man City Predicted XI vs Coventry: Enzo Fernandez's Impact

Manchester City have thrown money at the squad. Now Enzo Maresca has to make it look like a plan.

After a frantic Deadline Day that delivered Enzo Fernandez, Iliman Ndiaye and Ayyoub Bouaddi, City walk into Saturday’s clash with Coventry armed with depth, options and a few uncomfortable conversations for those about to lose their places.

The spending is eye-watering. The margin for error is tiny.

Fernandez the centrepiece

Fernandez is the marquee arrival, the one who changes the feel of the team before he has even kicked a ball. Signed for a British transfer record-equalling £125m, the expectation is simple: he starts.

Maresca did not bring him in to watch from the bench. The Argentine should walk straight into the XI and straight into the heart of City’s midfield, with the rest of the structure bending around him.

Ndiaye, a deal that could rise to £65m, looks more like one who will be eased in. Bouaddi, at £86m, also appears set for a watching brief from the sidelines at first. When a club recruits at this scale, reputations and old hierarchies vanish quickly. Shirts are won, not inherited.

Midfield reshaped, Guehi pushed back

The immediate casualty of Fernandez’s arrival is clear. Marc Guehi’s short-lived stint as a holding midfielder is effectively done. It was an intriguing tweak, useful in certain moments, but never likely to be a long-term solution.

With Fernandez available, City can restore a more orthodox structure in the middle. Elliot Anderson is the favourite to line up alongside him, tasked with providing legs, balance and the dirty work that lets the new signing dictate.

That shift tightens the squeeze further up the pitch. Rayan Cherki has started the season sharply. Phil Foden’s talent is unquestioned. Neither can coast. Every misplaced touch now comes with someone of real quality waiting behind them.

This is the squad depth City wanted. Now the battle for minutes begins.

Defence finally finding some rhythm

Behind them, the back line is starting to look less like a weekly experiment.

Abdukodir Khusanov is expected to keep his place on the right of defence. Ruben Dias and Guehi should form the central pairing, with Josko Gvardiol continuing on the left. On paper, it is the most settled and balanced unit City have fielded since the early weeks of the campaign.

That stability matters. Coventry will arrive at the Etihad looking for any hint of uncertainty, any loose pass or miscommunication to pounce on. City’s reshuffled back four can’t afford the chaos that marked some of their early-season performances.

Injury picture and selection calls

Matheus Nunes remains a doubt, his fitness still short of where Maresca would like it. Jeremy Doku is definitely out, still recovering from the calf injury he picked up against Arsenal in the Community Shield.

Those absences simplify some decisions in the final third but not all of them. With Doku unavailable, the wide roles tilt towards Antony Semenyo and Cherki, with Foden expected to drift inside and link with Erling Haaland.

The likely shape is familiar. The faces within it are not.
