Mahama's Warning on Ghana’s Talent Drain in Football

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has sounded a clear warning over the future of the country’s domestic football, arguing that the constant early sale of promising players is steadily eroding the strength of the local leagues.

Speaking on September 8, 2026, at Jubilee House during a meeting with Nations FC, Medeama SC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies, Mahama linked the exodus of young talent directly to a decline in the standard of the national championship.

“We lose them too early”

Mahama pointed to a familiar pattern: a youngster breaks through, shows a few flashes of real quality, and almost immediately attracts the gaze of scouts. Before local fans can fully embrace their new star, the player is gone.

In his view, that cycle is damaging. The domestic league never gets to mature its own talent. Teams are forced into constant rebuilding. Supporters are left watching what feels like a never‑ending audition for foreign clubs instead of a fully fledged competition in its own right.

The president stressed that Ghana must find ways to keep its best young players at home longer. Extending their stay in the national league, he argued, would not only strengthen local clubs but also raise the overall level of competition week in, week out.

National team as a stepping stone

Mahama did not call for closing the door on overseas moves. Instead, he proposed a different pathway.

He suggested that promising players should be given chances with the national team earlier, using international football as a crucial phase in their development. Exposure to higher-intensity matches and different styles of play, he believes, would help them grow into more complete, mature footballers.

Only after that stage, Mahama argued, should they become prime targets for international or even domestic scouts looking to move them on. By then, they would leave not as raw prospects, but as fully formed professionals who have already given more back to the Ghanaian game.

It is a challenge laid down not just to clubs and agents, but to the entire football structure in Ghana: can the country build a league strong enough that its brightest talents grow there first, before they light up the rest of the world?
