Lucas Digne's Stalled Return to PSG: What Went Wrong?

Lucas Digne’s return to Parc des Princes has stalled almost before it began.

Luis Enrique has left the 33-year-old out of the Paris Saint-Germain squad for Friday night’s clash with Monaco, a stark early judgment on the left-back who only arrived from Aston Villa in the summer and signed a contract through to 2029.

This is no minor rotation call. According to L’Equipe, the omission is down purely to “sporting reasons” after a flat start to Digne’s second spell in Paris, with the Spaniard unconvinced by what he has seen in the opening weeks.

The warning signs came early. Digne watched the Ligue 1 opener against Rennes from the bench, unused, as his hopes of walking straight into regular first-team football evaporated on day one. He finally got on the pitch a week later against Lille, thrown on in the 71st minute with PSG 2-0 down and chasing a lost cause.

The comeback arrived. The personal redemption did not.

PSG struck in the first and fifth minutes of stoppage time to salvage a dramatic point, but Digne’s short cameo failed to move the needle for the coaching staff. Those limited minutes appear to have been enough for Enrique and his team to make a harsh call: out of the squad entirely for Monaco, and very much out of favour.

The timing makes the decision even more brutal.

PSG are in the middle of a mini-crisis at left-back. Nuno Mendes, the undisputed starter in that role, is serving a domestic suspension after his straight red card against Lens in the Trophee des Champions before the season kicked off. The dismissal ruled the Portugal international out of the first three league games, clearing a path that looked tailor-made for Digne to step through.

Instead, the door has been slammed shut.

With Mendes sidelined, Enrique has turned to centre-backs to patch the flank, preferring the adaptability of Lucas Beraldo and Lucas Hernandez on the left of the back four rather than trusting a specialist full-back signed on a long-term deal.

For Digne, who returned to Paris expecting a second act, the message is blunt: his place at PSG will have to be earned the hard way, if it still exists at all.
