Liverpool's Summer Transfer Plans: Barcola as the Key Move

Liverpool’s summer has drifted, not detonated. That may be about to change.

An “exciting star”, as billed in France, is now edging towards Anfield, with Bradley Barcola emerging as the late-window jolt this flat Liverpool market has badly needed. According to Le Parisien, the winger could switch clubs within days, and Liverpool are described as virtually his only remaining serious option.

For a fanbase told in June to expect a statement summer, this is the first move that feels remotely like one.

A big summer that never really started

The mood two months ago was very different. The message from inside the club was clear: this was meant to be a major rebuild, a bold reset to arm Andoni Iraola with a squad capable of sustaining a title challenge and a deep European run.

Yan Diomande was lined up as the marquee arrival, the player earmarked to step into the void left by Mohamed Salah. Another top-level winger was expected to follow, reshaping Liverpool’s front line in one hit.

None of that materialised.

Liverpool missed out on Diomande. Ronald Araujo and Victor Munoz have arrived to add depth and a touch of quality, but the glaring issues in the squad remain obvious to anyone watching. The sense of drift has grown with every passing week of the window.

Deadwood, blocked spots and a ticking clock

The problems are not just about who hasn’t come in. They’re also about who hasn’t gone out.

Non-homegrown slots are full. That means Liverpool cannot simply add players at will. Someone has to move before anyone else can walk through the door. Wataru Endo, Calvin Ramsay and Federico Chiesa are among those whose futures are under scrutiny as the club looks to clear space.

So the club waits. And waits.

Behind the scenes, Liverpool are working on a potential double swoop from PSG for Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye. It is ambitious. It is complicated. And at this stage, it is uncertain whether both deals can actually be pushed over the line.

Time is still on the club’s side, but the clock is no longer a distant concern. It’s loud now.

The Gakpo question

Amid all this, one name keeps circling back into the conversation: Cody Gakpo.

The Dutch forward is a Premier League winner and has played a significant part for Liverpool. Yet there is a growing sense that the club would listen to a serious offer for him before the window shuts.

On the surface, it feels counterintuitive. This is a squad already short of attacking depth. Letting a senior forward leave sounds like an unnecessary gamble.

But that is exactly why Liverpool are pushing so hard for Barcola and Mbaye.

If both arrive, Iraola suddenly has a very different forward unit to work with. Fresh options. More variety. Greater depth. In that context, cashing in on Gakpo becomes a strategic decision rather than a reckless one.

And there is a market for him. Tottenham are keen, and a strong offer from north London could yet force a decision at Anfield.

One thing is non-negotiable from Liverpool’s side: they cannot afford to lose Gakpo without adequate replacements already secured. To do so, with the squad as it is, would be self-sabotage.

Barcola as the domino piece

That is why Barcola’s situation feels so pivotal.

Le Parisien report that his future is “accelerating”, with a move expected within days and Liverpool now effectively standing alone in the race. If he does head to Anfield, the entire attacking picture shifts.

Barcola and Mbaye through the door would give Liverpool the cover and flexibility to sanction a big-money exit. Gakpo would instantly become a sale that funds a reshaped forward line rather than a hole that needs plugging.

Suddenly, what has been a slow, frustrating window could flip into something far more dramatic in its final stretch.

For now, it is still a waiting game. But the pieces are lining up. If Barcola does walk out at Anfield in the coming days, he may not just be another signing.

He could be the domino that finally makes Liverpool’s summer make sense.
