Liverpool F.C. Welcomes New Investment from 1892 Holdings
Liverpool’s ownership picture has shifted again, and this time some of the biggest names in global finance and tech are stepping into the frame.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has agreed to sell a minority stake in Liverpool F.C. to 1892 Holdings, a new consortium fronted by Amit Bhatia. The deal keeps FSG firmly in charge – they retain majority ownership and full operational control – but it injects fresh capital and heavyweight backing into one of world football’s most commercially powerful clubs.
At the heart of the move is EE Capital, the family office of Elaine and Eduardo Saverin, which is investing in Liverpool through its position in 1892 Holdings. Saverin, a Facebook co‑founder, now joins the cast of high-profile figures with a financial interest in the Premier League side’s future.
1892 Holdings itself brings serious muscle. It is led and managed by Bhatia, with investment from Bhatia and the Mittal Family Trusts, alongside K5 Sports – a K5 Global fund in which Jeff Bezos is the lead investor – and EE Capital. For Liverpool, it means a strategic alliance with money, reach, and influence across technology, media, and global markets.
FSG has framed the move as a play for the long term. The new investment is designed to underpin Liverpool’s growth ambitions, on and off the pitch, by uniting specialists from global business, tech, and high-end investment. The plan is not just to write bigger cheques, but to sharpen the club’s decision-making and expand its commercial horizons.
The consortium partners will work alongside FSG and Liverpool’s leadership team to identify and drive opportunities that strengthen the team’s competitive edge and the club’s broader operations. That could range from data and analytics to international expansion and new revenue streams – all aimed at keeping Liverpool in step with the financial firepower of their biggest rivals.
Behind the scenes, the deal also underlines the growing role of elite law firms in football’s new money era. Clifford Chance advised EE Capital on the investment, with partners Neil Barlow and Eric Schaffer leading the mandate, supported by Katherine Moir and Todd Lowther.
They were backed by a sizeable team: Katerina Papacosma, Austin Johnson, Ariel Cohen, Antonio Folgore, Jamie Andrew, Xue Zhang, Ira Aghai, Kieran Mathiak, Daryl Liu, Syafiq Poh, Rachel Tong and Amanda Teh all worked on the transaction, reflecting the complexity and global reach of the structure.
Liverpool remain under FSG’s control. But with 1892 Holdings now at the table, the club has added another layer of financial clout and strategic expertise. In an era where the margins at the top are razor-thin and the race for revenue is relentless, this is not just a change in the shareholder register – it is a statement about how Liverpool intend to compete in the next phase of football’s financial arms race.
