Liverpool's Defensive Pursuit Hits Setback as Van Hecke Chooses Tottenham

Liverpool’s search for their next defensive pillar is set to hit an early setback. Jan Paul van Hecke, the Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back admired across the Premier League, has his heart set on Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool Knock, Spurs Step Through

Liverpool have been in the market for a new defender with Ibrahima Konate heading out and Virgil van Dijk edging into the latter stages of his career. Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet are lined up to join Andoni Iraola’s squad, but both are long-term projects rather than instant leaders of a back line.

So the club turned to Van Hecke. According to Dutch outlet VI, Liverpool made contact with the 26-year-old Netherlands international, who is under contract at Brighton until 2027. Chelsea and Newcastle United have also monitored him, with VI describing him as Brighton’s “absolute star player” over recent months.

Plenty of admirers, then. But only one club truly in control of the situation.

Tottenham have surged to the front. VI report that Spurs have “pushed ahead in recent weeks” and are now planning a third bid for the defender. Personal terms are already agreed, leaving the London club working to close out a deal.

De Zerbi Factor Tilts the Battle

The turning point sits on the Tottenham bench. Van Hecke worked under Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton and, per the same report, came away “enthusiastic” after talks with the Italian about a reunion in North London.

That conversation appears to have settled any doubts. “Van Hecke himself has therefore made up his mind: it has to be Tottenham,” VI state. Despite noise in the British press about Liverpool and others, the defender now “only wants to go to Tottenham”.

Inside Spurs, the message is clear: keep pushing until it’s done. The club are said to be working to move the deal into its final stages quickly, allowing Van Hecke to head into the World Cup with his future resolved and a major move locked in.

Dutch Pressure, North London Pull

The tug around Van Hecke’s future is not just club-driven. It has spilled into the Netherlands camp as well.

Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven has been openly encouraging his compatriot to join him in Ange Postecoglou’s defence. “I did talk to Jan Paul briefly about Tottenham. I think it is a good step for him,” Van de Ven said, making no attempt to hide his view.

National team coach Ronald Koeman, meanwhile, struck a more measured tone. Asked about the proposed move to Spurs, he admitted his preference for clarity but accepted reality.

“Ideally, I would prefer a player to have peace of mind regarding his club,” Koeman said on Sunday. “And that there is clarity about the future. But I cannot stop it.”

The Dutch camp want focus. Tottenham want a deal. Van Hecke wants Tottenham.

Liverpool, for all their planning and early contact, look destined to watch this one unfold from the outside. For Iraola, and for a club quietly reshaping its defence, the message is stark: the next cornerstone of their back line will have to come from somewhere else.
