Lazio Pursues Mauro Icardi for Striker Role

Lazio have made Mauro Icardi their marquee idea for the No. 9 role. For now, the feeling isn’t mutual.

The Roman club have been working to convince the 33-year-old to lead their attack on a free transfer, seeing him as the headline option alongside Sassuolo forward Andrea Pinamonti. The profile fits: Icardi was one of Serie A’s deadliest finishers during his spells at Sampdoria and Inter Milan, then added experience at Paris Saint-Germain and Galatasaray. He has been without a club since the start of the summer, a rare opportunity on the market.

Lazio moved early. Angelo Fabiani and his team opened talks, sensing the chance to land a proven goalscorer without a transfer fee. At first, there were encouraging signs. According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Icardi and his entourage signalled they were ready to sit down and negotiate with the Biancocelesti.

Then the brakes went on.

The discussions have now been put on hold by the player’s camp. Earlier reports highlighted a sizeable gap between Lazio’s proposal and Icardi’s salary demands, but Di Marzio stresses that money is not the decisive factor. The striker is weighing something else: the project.

At 33, with most of his big moves already behind him, Icardi is treating this decision as a last major crossroads. He wants a team that can match his ambitions on the pitch, not just on the contract. That means he is prepared to wait, listen to other offers and scan the landscape before choosing his next destination.

Time, crucially, is on his side. As a free agent, Icardi can sign outside the transfer window, giving him the freedom to delay a call even after the market closes.

Lazio do not enjoy that luxury. They cannot sit still while their primary target stalls. With the season demands looming and the need for a reliable finisher growing sharper by the day, the club must decide how long they can afford to keep a place open for Icardi – and when to turn fully towards alternatives like Pinamonti instead.
