Laois Faces London in Tailteann Cup Round 2A Showdown
Laois’ reward for their high-scoring opening salvo is a journey across the Irish Sea. Justin McNulty’s side, fresh from putting 1-23 past Wicklow, now head for the capital to face a London team that rattled in four first-half goals against Waterford.
Two counties, two statement wins. Only one keeps rolling.
Laois on the road, London in full flow
McNulty enjoyed a small personal victory at the weekend, outgunning former Armagh team-mate Oisín McConville in Aughrim as Laois beat Wicklow 1-23 to 0-19. It was controlled, ruthless football, the sort of display that hints at a team eyeing a long summer.
London answered in their own way. Four goals before the break as they hammered Waterford on Sunday sent a jolt through the competition. They now get home advantage against Laois in Round 2A, and that clash already looks like one of the standout fixtures of the round.
Offaly lie in wait
Offaly, impressive winners away to Clare in Round 1, get to stay at home. Their prize is a fixture against the winner of Down v Leitrim.
Conor Laverty’s Down host Leitrim, managed by fellow Mourne man Steven Poacher, on Saturday evening in Newry. The stakes are layered: victory earns a crack at Offaly in Round 2A, defeat sends the loser into Round 2B, but with home advantage against Carlow.
One game, two possible paths. Both with plenty on the line.
Goals galore for Antrim, test ahead against Tipp
Antrim produced the wildest scoreline of the opening round. Six goals and 17 points, yet they still needed extra-time to shake off Carlow, emerging with only three points to spare. Mark Doran’s Saffrons now face a very different challenge.
Tipperary survived a late Sligo surge to book their place in Round 2A, and they will not be intimidated by Antrim’s attacking numbers. That pairing has the feel of a shoot-out, but with both sides knowing that a tighter defensive edge could be the difference between momentum and frustration.
Fermanagh host Wexford in Brewster Park test
The final Round 2A tie sends Division 3 finalists Wexford up to Brewster Park to face Fermanagh. Wexford arrive with form and confidence from the league, but Fermanagh’s home ground is rarely a comfortable venue for visitors.
Round 2A fixtures:
- Antrim v Tipperary
- Fermanagh v Wexford
- Offaly v winner of Down/Leitrim
- London v Laois
Last-chance saloon in Round 2B
For those in Round 2B, there is no safety net. Lose, and the Tailteann Cup journey ends.
Clare, beaten 1-17 to 1-14 by Offaly in Ennis, stay on familiar turf as they welcome Longford. It is a quick shot at redemption for Colm Collins’ side after letting that opening game slip away.
Wicklow, stung by Laois’ scoring spree, must regroup fast. They host Limerick in Aughrim, with the visitors still reeling from a heavy defeat to Wexford in the first round. Both teams badly need a performance; both know another flat outing means elimination.
Waterford, dismantled by London’s goal rush, will try to steady themselves at home against Sligo. Sligo pushed Tipperary hard but simply ran out of time, and they now carry the frustration of that near-miss into a knockout tie.
The loser of Down v Leitrim will not have long to dwell on Saturday’s result either. Home advantage awaits against Carlow in Round 2B, a game that will decide whether their season flickers back into life or fades out before June really bites.
Round 2B fixtures:
- Wicklow v Limerick
- Clare v Longford
- Waterford v Sligo
- Loser of Down/Leitrim v Carlow
All Round 2A and 2B games will be played on 23 and 24 May, with the first team named enjoying home advantage. New York, as ever, wait in the long grass, entering at the preliminary quarter-final stage.
The bracket is set. Now we find out who’s built for a real summer and who’s gone before the story truly starts.
