Killian Phillips Earns Republic of Ireland Call-Up After Injuries

Killian Phillips has been handed a late chance to stake his claim with the Republic of Ireland after a double injury setback forced Heimir Hallgrimsson into a reshuffle ahead of the UEFA Nations League campaign.

Jamie McGrath of Hibernian and Queens Park Rangers’ Harvey Vale both dropped out after suffering injuries on club duty at the weekend. Each pulled up in the warm-up before their respective fixtures against Aberdeen and Preston North End, and any lingering hope of involvement vanished with confirmation on Monday morning that neither would be fit for the international window.

Their misfortune opens the door for Phillips. The St Mirren midfielder will report to camp in Dublin today, linking up with the squad before they fly to Pristina for Thursday’s opener against Kosovo.

From there, the schedule turns demanding. The Boys in Green move on to Debrecen, Hungary, to take on Israel, then return home to a packed Aviva Stadium for a meeting with Austria in Dublin. The window closes with a second clash against Israel, this time in Bačka Topola, Serbia, rounding off a testing run that will give Hallgrimsson an early measure of his squad’s depth.

For Phillips, it is a significant step into a midfield group that already includes Finn Azaz, Conor Coventry, Jason Knight, Jayson Molumby and Bosun Lawal. The call-up drops him straight into a Nations League block that could shape not only Ireland’s campaign, but his own international future.
