Cole Palmer’s England return has been cut short before it even began – and his misfortune has opened the door for Morgan Gibbs-White.

Palmer’s setback halts international reboot

Palmer had just gone 90 minutes in Chelsea’s bruising 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, another sign of his growing importance at club level. After a summer spent watching the World Cup from home, he has responded in exactly the way Chelsea hoped: six starts from seven matches this season, four goals, two assists, and a central role in the Blues’ attack.

That form had finally forced the issue at international level. Tuchel brought him back into the senior set-up, keen to see him reassert himself on the biggest stage after that contentious World Cup omission. The message from the England manager was blunt: Palmer had “a point to prove” and needed “to step up” to keep his shirt and justify his selection.

Now, just as the stage was set, the curtain has come down again. Palmer has not played for England since a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan in March, and that wait will now stretch on until he can shake off this latest problem.

Questions around his durability are not new. A recurring groin issue dogged his 2025-26 campaign, to the frustration of then Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca – now in charge at Manchester City – who publicly admitted the situation “did not make sense” to him. This new setback only sharpens the focus on Palmer’s ability to stay fit at the very moment his international career needs momentum.

Gibbs-White gets the call he was close to

The injury cloud over Palmer has a silver lining for Gibbs-White. Initially left out of Tuchel’s squad, the Forest midfielder was, by the manager’s own admission on Friday, extremely close to making the original cut.

His numbers back that up. Gibbs-White has opened the domestic season in sharp form, with one goal and two assists in five league games, knitting Forest’s attacks together and driving play from midfield. His last England appearance came in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales in October 2025, and since then he has hovered on the edge of the senior picture.

Now he steps back in, not as a token replacement, but as a player arriving with rhythm and confidence. For a 26-year-old entering his prime, this is a window he cannot afford to let close.

Brutal schedule awaits Tuchel’s England

Gibbs-White joins up with an England squad staring at a punishing run of four fixtures in a single international break. Tuchel’s side open against World Cup holders Spain at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September – a test of nerve and quality right out of the gate.

Then comes a trip to the Czech Republic on 29 September, followed by another away assignment against Croatia on 3 October, two fixtures that will stretch the squad’s depth and resilience. England then return home to face the Czechs again on 6 October, closing an intense sequence that will leave little room for experimentation or error.

Palmer was supposed to use this block to re-anchor himself in the national team. Instead, he faces another stint on the sidelines, watching as someone else takes his chance.
