Manchester United have spent the summer reshaping their midfield. In Catalonia, Karim Adeyemi is busy showing them what they passed up.

Linked heavily with United in January, the German forward stayed put at Borussia Dortmund as the window closed. By the time the market opened again, the trail from Old Trafford had gone cold. Barcelona’s hadn’t. They waited, they watched the price fall, and then moved decisively: a £26.5million deal for a player valued at around £70m just months earlier.

On Sunday, that patience started to look like a steal.

Barcelona bargain, United’s what-if

Adeyemi’s rise has never been subtle. At Red Bull Salzburg, once he signed professional terms in 2018, he tore through defences: 33 goals and 24 assists in 94 games. Dortmund came calling in 2022, and the numbers kept coming – 36 goals and 25 assists across 125 appearances for Die Schwarzgelben, enough to put him firmly on the radar of Europe’s elite.

United were among the admirers in January, weighing up a move as they searched for attacking spark. When the moment came this summer, though, they turned their attention infield. Casemiro left, the club pivoted to the middle of the pitch, and in came Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea to reinforce the engine room.

Barcelona, playing the long game, pounced instead.

First goal, first statement

Against FC Basel on Sunday, Adeyemi finally pulled on the shirt in a setting that felt like more than a gentle run-out. Barca hit five in a 5-2 win as they fine-tuned their pre-season, and the 24-year-old was at the heart of it.

He scored his first Barcelona goal. He laid on an assist. He drove at defenders with the same directness that made him such a threat in Austria and Germany, but now in the colours of a club built on attacking theatre.

Spanish outlets did not hold back. SPORT called him the “star” of the show. Marca said he had “particularly stood out”. For a pre-season fixture, the language was striking. So was the reaction.

Social media erupts

The performance sent social media into overdrive. One X user summed up the disbelief at the fee: “How on earth did we convince Dortmund to let Adeyemi come for just €22M???”

Others focused on the potential. “He arrived quietly but could spring a surprise. Karim Adeyemi,” wrote another. A third post went even bigger on his status: “Adeyemi is far from an average player. A player who single-handedly took a team like Dortmund to a UCL final is consider elite for me.

“And a quick reminder: he's just 24yr. His output is pretty impressive. 30+ G/A averaging Saka's best szn, and he never played for an elite team.”

The praise kept coming. “Man, I’ve always believed in Adeyemi, but I never knew he had this in his locker. What a player!” said a fourth fan.

One voice did try to keep a lid on the hype, while still acknowledging the obvious talent: “A preseason match against Basel certifies nothing, due to the level of the opposition, but one can appreciate, in Adeyemi, the spark, the will to hurt, a certain degree of skill in the dribble, the intent of the pass and the shot.”

A new star in Catalonia – and a missed chance in Manchester?

Strip away the noise and one truth remains: Barcelona have landed a 24-year-old forward with proven end product across two leagues, at a price that looks out of step with the current market.

United, meanwhile, chose to invest elsewhere. Their midfield now carries a different look, but their attack remains under scrutiny after an inconsistent campaign. If Adeyemi carries this pre-season spark into La Liga and the Champions League, every goal in Blaugrana colours will sharpen the question at Old Trafford.
