Juventus Sign Jhon Lucumí: A Key Defensive Addition

Juventus finally have their man.

After a summer spent circling defensive targets and waiting for the right opening, the Bianconeri have moved decisively, landing Bologna center back Jhon Lucumí in a deal that could rise to €22 million.

A deal Juve – and Lucumí – were determined to make

The club confirmed on Monday that they will pay Bologna an initial €19.5 million for the Colombian defender, with the fee spread over three financial years. Up to €0.6 million is earmarked for ancillary costs, while a further €2 million is tied to performance-related bonuses.

For Lucumí, this was the move. The 28-year-old, fresh off a strong World Cup campaign, had made it clear where he wanted to go. He turned down other options and sat tight while Juventus and Bologna haggled over the final details. Talks finally broke through late last week. The waiting ended. The transfer he had pushed for all summer was signed off.

Lucumí has put pen to paper on a four-year contract running until June 30, 2030, and is expected to earn around €2.5 million net per season.

From Bologna’s backbone to Juve’s rebuild

This is not a speculative signing. Lucumí arrives in Turin after four seasons in Emilia-Romagna, where he grew into one of Bologna’s most reliable pillars.

Under Thiago Motta, he stood at the heart of a side that surged into the Champions League places, then followed that high by lifting the Coppa Italia the following year. Across each of his four Serie A campaigns with Bologna, he logged at least 2,200 league minutes, a marker of both consistency and trust from the touchline.

Juventus, whose back line has cried out for renewal and fresh energy, now plug in a defender in his prime, battle-tested in Serie A and on the international stage.

The club wanted a cornerstone. Lucumí wanted the black and white shirt. Now comes the real question: can he anchor the next great Juventus defense?
