There is another layer to this. Inside Atleti’s dressing room, his public desire to leave and his clear preference for Barcelona have not gone down well. The tension is real. Alvarez is understood to be keen on avoiding a prolonged stand-off with teammates and staff, and a clean break could suit him as much as the club.
