José Mourinho's Cautious Approach with Aurelien Tchouameni
José Mourinho is drawing a clear line with Aurelien Tchouameni: no shortcuts, no gambles.
Real Madrid’s coach has decided the French midfielder will only return when he is at full tilt, even if that means doing without one of his most important players for the opening stretch of La Liga.
Lessons from the World Cup
Tchouameni’s current situation is still tied to what happened at the World Cup. He picked up a knock during the tournament yet pushed through the pain barrier, missing two matches late on before returning for the semi-final. That decision aggravated the problem and left him struggling to train at the same tempo as his teammates once he came back to club duty.
The consequences have carried into this season. Tchouameni sat out all of Real Madrid’s preseason friendlies. Mourinho has seen enough injury chaos in his career to know what comes next if he rushes a player in that condition.
“With Tchouameni, we have to keep our emotions in check. I don't want him to be in and out, in and out again,” he warned before the Malaga game. He doesn’t just want the midfielder available; he wants him stable.
“I don't want to start the season in August with a situation like this. I hope to have Tchouameni fit again, and I prefer to wait a little longer,” Mourinho added, underlining the long-term view.
A pillar Mourinho refuses to risk
This is not a fringe player being wrapped in cotton wool. Mourinho sees Tchouameni as one of the pillars of his team, the main defensive specialist in Real Madrid’s midfield and the anchor around which the rest of the structure is built.
That is precisely why the coach will not force him back for the third league match. The plan, according to the report, is to ease him in around the fifth matchday in La Liga, when Real Madrid face Rayo Vallecano on the weekend of 14 September. By then, the expectation is that he will be ready to start accumulating minutes rather than just surviving them.
The club’s recent history backs this cautious stance. Last season, Real Madrid suffered 54 injuries. The sheer volume set alarm bells ringing at Valdebebas and has directly shaped how the medical staff and coaching team now handle recovery timelines. One of the first internal measures: no more rushing players back for short-term fixes that lead to long-term setbacks.
Tchouameni is the prime example of this new line. He will not be hurried.
From whistles to applause
The midfielder’s importance is not just tactical; it is also symbolic. His early seasons at the Bernabeu were turbulent. Sections of the crowd doubted him, and the whistles were loud enough to hear. He had to fight through physical problems and the mental strain of that scrutiny.
Last season, he did exactly that. He turned himself into one of the most appreciated players in the squad, winning over supporters and coaches alike. His presence in front of the back line became non-negotiable.
With uncertainty around Eduardo Camavinga’s role and consistency, Tchouameni is now the only midfielder in the squad who can reliably hold that pure anchoring position. When he is missing, the entire balance of the side shifts.
A delicate internal balance
There is another layer to this season for Tchouameni. The end of the last campaign brought an uncomfortable episode: his conflict with Federico Valverde. Both players insist the dispute is resolved, but the after-effects still linger in the analysis of their on-pitch relationship. They did not share more minutes together after the incident, and that detail has not gone unnoticed.
This year, the Frenchman has to build on his positive performances while also helping to smooth out that dynamic. Mourinho knows he will need both players firing and fully committed if Madrid are to get through the grind of the season.
All of that makes his stance even clearer. Tchouameni will only come back when his body is ready and his rhythm is right. No half-measures, no “in and out” cycles.
Real Madrid can cope without him for a few weeks. The real question is what they will look like once their midfield pillar finally returns at full strength.
