Jhon Lucumi Joins Juventus as New Defensive Pillar

The Turin club have struck a deal with Bologna worth an initial €18 million, with a further €2 million tied to bonuses, to land the Colombian centre-back. Lucumi has signed a four-year contract, earning €3 million net per season, a clear statement that this is not a stopgap move but the spine of a new project.

Crucially, the decision was his as much as theirs. Faced with several other offers, Lucumi pushed for Juventus, making the Bianconeri his priority and leaving no doubt about where he wanted his prime years to unfold.

From Cali to Turin, via Genk and Bologna

Lucumi’s journey began at Deportivo Cali, where he broke into the first team at just 17. His rise accelerated in Belgium with Genk from 2018, where he grew into one of the league’s standout defenders and earned a reputation for composure, timing, and reading of the game.

Juventus underlined that pedigree in their announcement on the club’s official channels, presenting him as a player “at the peak of his powers, ready to make an immediate contribution to the team ahead of the 2026/27 season.” The welcome was simple, but telling: “Welcome to Juventus, Jhon!”

Bologna knew exactly what they were losing. Since arriving in the summer of 2022, Lucumi became a fixture at the heart of their defence, racking up 152 appearances in all competitions across four seasons. Rarely rotated, rarely rested, he evolved into one of the Rossoblu’s most reliable performers.

He also tasted the Champions League with Bologna, a landmark achievement for the club and for the player. One of his two goals in their colours came at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara during that spell, a reminder that while his primary job is to shut the door, he can still make a mark at the other end.

Straight into the Juventus plans

Now the move is complete, there will be no easing-in period. Lucumi is set to join tactical sessions with his new team-mates immediately, thrown straight into the work of organising a revamped backline.

The timing is tight but tantalising. Juventus open their 2026-27 Serie A campaign away to Frosinone on Sunday, August 23, a fixture already being circled as Lucumi’s likely competitive debut. All signs point to the Colombian marshalling the defence from day one.

A new centre-back, his prime years ahead of him, a heavyweight club demanding an instant impact. For Lucumi and Juventus alike, there will be no hiding place.
