Ismail Kartal Resigns from Fenerbahce but Is Told to Stay

Turkish football delivered another surreal night on Thursday, even by its own wild standards.

Minutes after Fenerbahce had been held 1-1 at home by Roma in the Champions League, head coach Ismail Kartal walked into his post‑match press conference and dropped a bombshell. The 65-year-old announced he was resigning – and not just stepping aside temporarily, but leaving “never to return”.

He framed it as an act of sacrifice. Kartal said he was taking the drastic step “to clear the way for the club”, a line that landed like a farewell note after a bruising evening in Istanbul.

Then the story flipped.

Barely moments after Kartal had left the room, Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim appeared in front of reporters and insisted nothing had changed. Kartal, he said, “continues in his role” as head coach.

Yildirim pointed to the flashpoint that had clearly shaken his manager. During the game, he said, “some fans threw a bottle at the coach’s head”. Kartal, already under pressure after dropping points at home in Europe, had been hit and was “upset about it”.
