Inter's Bid for Tottenham Defender Djed Spence: A Move to Serie A

Inter have made their move for Tottenham defender Djed Spence, tabling a formal opening bid as they look to prise the England international out of north London.

The 25-year-old has slipped down the pecking order under Roberto De Zerbi despite his strong international standing, and Spurs now look prepared to sanction his exit after a heavy summer of Premier League spending.

Inter show their hand

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Inter have lodged a proposal worth in excess of €30 million, a clear statement that the Nerazzurri see Spence as a key piece in Christian Chivu’s defensive rebuild.

It would be a return to familiar territory for the former Nottingham Forest standout. Spence previously spent time on loan in Italy with Genoa, and Inter view that experience as a foundation rather than a footnote as they reshape their back line.

The move has taken a major step forward off the pitch. According to GiveMeSport, Spence has already given the green light, reaching a full agreement on personal terms with the Milan club. He wants the move. He wants Serie A again.

Spurs dig in on valuation

The deal is not done yet. Tottenham intend to squeeze every last euro out of a defender whose reputation soared after a sensational World Cup campaign with England.

Inter’s offer of around €30m (£25.6m) is substantial, but Spurs are holding out for closer to €35m (£30m) plus performance-related add-ons. Club figures are well aware that other Premier League sides have tracked Spence this summer and believe that interest underpins their valuation.

For now, the gap is financial, not personal. The player is on board. The clubs are not.

Defensive shake-up leaves Spence boxed in

Spence’s possible exit comes against the backdrop of a major defensive overhaul at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke have all arrived in the current window, reshaping the back line in front of De Zerbi. First-choice right-back Pedro Porro has also signed a new long-term contract, nailing down his spot and tightening the squeeze on any rivals for his position.

On both flanks, the path is blocked. Robertson and Destiny Udogie crowd the left, Porro dominates the right. Spence, once seen as a long-term option, now sits behind all three in the full-back hierarchy.

Inter pull clear of Premier League rivals

Spence’s situation has not gone unnoticed in England. Manchester United and Liverpool were both linked at various points in the window, raising the prospect of a domestic tug-of-war.

That never truly materialised. Romano has clarified that Liverpool’s supposed push for Spence was overstated, with nothing advanced between the club and the player. Without a concrete bid from Anfield and no formal escalation from Old Trafford, the door opened for Inter.

The Italian side have walked straight through it. With Spence already aligned on personal terms, the operation has moved into a decisive phase, centred on negotiations between the two boardrooms.
