Hugo Ekitike's Plea to Keep Ibrahima Konate at Liverpool

Hugo Ekitike has joined Liverpool supporters in a very public plea: keep Ibrahima Konate at Anfield.

As news grows that Konate is likely to leave on a free transfer this summer after contract talks stalled, the defender posted a picture of himself arriving for France duty ahead of the World Cup. It should have been a shared stage with Ekitike, but the forward’s serious Achilles injury kept him out of the tournament.

The comments section beneath Konate’s post quickly turned red. Liverpool fans piled in, begging him to stay. Then Ekitike added his own nudge.

Replying to one supporter urging Konate to sign, the Liverpool striker wrote “signe frere” with two laughing emojis – a light-hearted but pointed “sign, brother” aimed straight at his teammate and friend. It was playful. The message behind it was not.

Only weeks ago, this situation looked very different. Konate spoke confidently about his future after helping Liverpool beat Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, suggesting an agreement was close.

“For sure, there is a big chance I’m here next season,” he told reporters that day. “This is what I always wanted. I’m waiting to sort the contract, but when everything is sorted, you will have to ask Richard (Hughes) what I said to him in September, November and he’s going to say something to make everyone quiet.

“When everything's going to be sorted, I wish you had a discussion with Richard (Hughes) and asked what I said to him a few months ago, before everyone talked about everything. When he’s going to reply, you will see. I just wish that.”

The confidence in those words has not been matched by action. The deal never arrived. Now the expectation around the club is stark: Konate is set to walk away for nothing.

That possibility lands at a delicate moment for Arne Slot. Liverpool are already braced for the departure of several big personalities, and Konate has been vocal about embracing a leadership role in a dressing room in transition.

“I think I'm a leader already for this team, for the younger players, and for everyone to be fair,” he said. “We know this is part of the football life. The legends are going to leave one day and after, it's going to be our turn to take the lead. I started this already and it's a big responsibility.

“We start and we play football to have this kind of chance and to make sure everything is fine for this amazing club. But I need the help of everyone as well.”

Those are not the words of a player easing his way towards the exit. They sound like the foundation of a new era. Yet the clock is ticking.

Konate arrived from RB Leipzig in 2021 and has spent five years at Anfield, growing into one of Europe’s most imposing central defenders when fit. On a free transfer, he will not be short of suitors. Real Madrid and PSG have already been linked and will not need a second invitation if Liverpool fail to close the door.

For now, the saga plays out in boardrooms and on social media. The club weighs its options, rivals circle, and a teammate recovering from a serious injury types out three words on Instagram: “signe frere.”
