Goretzka's Injury Adds to Aston Villa's Struggles

Leon Goretzka’s Aston Villa career has barely begun, and already it’s on pause.

The 31-year-old midfielder revealed on Monday via Instagram that he has been forced to step away from action, ruling himself out until after the international fixtures at the end of September and start of October.

“Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after the time without matches,” Goretzka wrote. “It is frustrating, but I need this short break now so I can come back at full strength.”

The message was as much an explanation as it was a reassurance. Goretzka stressed that he feels at home at Villa, thanking the Europa League winners’ supporters for the way they have embraced him. He said he feels he is in the right place, comfortable in his new surroundings, and wants to use the coming weeks to recover fully.

The timing, though, is brutal for a club already reeling.

Goretzka will miss at least four more matches. Villa travel to Bruges in the Champions League on Tuesday still searching for their first points of the season. Around that, two Premier League fixtures and a League Cup tie loom before the international break, all now to be navigated without one of their marquee summer arrivals.

On 10 October, the Birmingham club are scheduled to return from the break with a home clash against Brentford FC, a date that now doubles as a tentative marker for Goretzka’s comeback.

His absence only sharpens the focus on Villa’s disastrous start. After eight years at Bayern Munich, the 73-cap Germany international arrived on a free transfer carrying pedigree, experience and expectation. Yet Unai Emery’s side have stumbled badly out of the blocks: three league games, no wins, no goals.

Two straight defeats to open the campaign set an ominous tone. A goalless draw against Nottingham Forest at the weekend finally put a point on the board, but did little to ease the sense of drift around a team that has recently grown used to upward momentum.

The summer exodus has not helped. Villa lost four key figures from their successful recent era in Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins, ripping out the spine and the cutting edge that underpinned their rise.

Now, with a reshaped squad still searching for rhythm and their high-profile midfield addition temporarily out of the picture, Emery must find answers quickly.

The fixtures will not wait. The question is whether Villa can.
