Troy Parrott Shines in Real Betis Victory Over Getafe

Troy Parrott marked his return to the Real Betis starting XI with a sharp, inventive display as Manuel Pellegrini’s side ground out a 1-0 win over Getafe on Thursday night, a result that pushed them up to third in La Liga.

Parrott nearly stuns Getafe early

Back in from the start after remaining on the bench for the 2-1 victory away to Villarreal on Monday, the 24-year-old Dubliner wasted no time announcing himself.

Inside five minutes, he almost produced a goal to replay all season.

Pouncing on a loose Getafe pass around halfway, Parrott looked up and went for broke, lifting an audacious effort over David Soria from distance. The goalkeeper scrambled back and, at full stretch, just managed to claw the ball away with his fingertips. The home crowd gasped; Getafe had been warned.

Betis took control from there. They moved the ball with authority, pinned Getafe back and created chances, but the final touch kept deserting them. Antony twice lashed efforts over the bar when well placed, the frustration beginning to simmer in the stands.

Betis break through, with Parrott at the heart of it

The pressure finally told right on the stroke of half-time, and Parrott played a central role.

Breaking out from their own half, Abde Ezzalzouli carried the ball into midfield and slipped it wide to Antony bursting down the flank. Parrott drove through the middle, timing his movement to perfection. Antony picked him out on the edge of the box, and with one composed touch, Parrott returned the ball across goal into Abde’s path.

Abde did the rest, drilling a low finish past Soria on 45 minutes to give Betis the lead their dominance demanded. Parrott didn’t get his wonder goal, but he had his assist – and Betis finally had a cushion.

Betis hang on as Getafe rally late

Getafe, sitting deep and stubborn, refused to open up even after falling behind. That left Betis probing and recycling possession, but without the space to land a decisive second blow.

Pellegrini went to his bench midway through the second half, withdrawing Parrott, Isco and Abde in search of fresh legs and a different attacking spark. The changes didn’t bring another goal. Instead, they ushered in a nervy finish.

Getafe, sensing one last chance, pushed forward late on and forced Betis to defend their box. The hosts stood firm, saw out the pressure and closed out a tight 1-0 win at Estadio La Cartuja.

The victory lifts Betis to third place in La Liga, level on 15 points with second-placed Real Madrid, behind only on goal difference. Barcelona sit top with a perfect return of 18 points from six games.

For Parrott, it was another important step. A fortnight ago, he came off the bench at La Cartuja to score the winner against Real Madrid, handing José Mourinho’s side their first defeat of the season. Now he has followed that moment with a standout start and a decisive assist.

The question is no longer whether he belongs at this level. It’s how far he can push this Betis side in a title race that suddenly looks very real.
