Frank Lampard Signals Changes for EFL Cup Tie Against Aston Villa

Frank Lampard is ready to shake things up.

The Coventry City boss signalled that changes are coming for Wednesday night’s EFL Cup third-round tie against Aston Villa, as he looks for a spark in a season that has started with four straight Premier League defeats.

Villa have hardly been free-flowing themselves, scoring just once so far this campaign, and the cup offers both clubs a different kind of pressure. For Lampard, it also offers an opportunity.

Fringe players set for their chance

A number of Coventry’s summer arrivals and squad players have barely had a look-in. New signings Stephen Mfuni and Yann Gboho are still waiting for their first starts of the season, while Sidiki Cherif has yet to complete a full 90 minutes.

Lampard made it clear that those on the fringes have pushed their case on the training ground and now need to be trusted on the pitch.

“When you work day to day with players and they are training at a good level and want to get in the team – then sometimes you have to give them the opportunities and they hopefully show you stuff that bodes well going forward,” he said.

The Coventry manager acknowledged the usual debate around rotation in cup competitions but insisted he cannot ignore what he sees every week at the training ground.

“We will certainly try and strike the balance between being competitive as we want to be and potential to see some players and show what they can do.”

Derby edge, even without the league billing

Changes or not, Lampard is under no illusion about what this tie means. A Midlands derby under the lights, against a club of Villa’s stature, still lands heavily with a fanbase that has been starved of such occasions.

“I’m very excited for the occasion,” he said. “I know this is not a Premier League fixture; we got to the Premier League for these kinds of fixtures and is a game the Coventry fans hold dear, not having too many of these over the years, so it’s not short on me.”

Coventry need a result to lift the mood. Villa need goals to find their rhythm. Lampard, somewhere in the middle, is gambling that fresh legs and hungry minds can turn a cup night into a turning point.
