Ferland Mendy Undergoes Thigh Surgery, Faces Months Out
Ferland Mendy has taken the most serious step yet in a battle that has stalked his season. The Real Madrid left-back underwent surgery on Monday to repair a recurring right thigh injury, a procedure carried out in Lyon.
According to a medical source, the operation went well. The outlook, at least in the short term, is more encouraging than many inside the game had feared. Mendy is expected to be sidelined for three to four months.
That timeline matters. In recent weeks, concern had grown that the 30-year-old could be facing up to a year out with what was described as a potentially career-threatening problem. The injury flared again during a La Liga match on May 3, the latest and most alarming episode in a season that has never allowed him to settle.
This is his fifth injury of the campaign. For a player whose game is built on power, acceleration and the ability to shut down an entire flank, the constant stop-start rhythm has been brutal.
Mendy’s journey makes the setback feel even heavier. Formed in the Paris Saint-Germain youth ranks, hardened at Le Havre, then elevated at Lyon, he climbed steadily to the top, earning his move to Real Madrid and a place in the France setup. Between 2018 and 2024 he collected 10 caps, a figure that hints at what he offered when fully fit but also at how often physical issues have interrupted his international ambitions.
Now the road runs back through the treatment room and the long, lonely grind of rehabilitation. The surgery has bought him time and a clearer horizon. The next question is whether his body will finally let his talent breathe again.
